The first half of the film was fantastic. Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris, and even David Alan Grier in his small role were all hilarious. Lead actor John Boyega (who kind of reminds me in this role of Ice Cube) and J. Alphonse Nicholson were also great. The soundtrack was perfect.
But by the time that Kiefer Sutherland's character appears, the film loses a lot of the humor. If the first third to half of the film was a 9/10, the latter half drops to a 5.5/10. (It doesn't help that I haven't liked Kiefer Sutherland in anything since "24".) The makeup Boyega wore in one of the key reveal scenes, which occurred toward the end, was completely unconvincing.
Setting aside the quality of the acting and production and thinking about the film on another level, it's a bit unsettling that they chose to tell this story in blaxploitation form, with all the stereotypes of black gangbangers, pimps, and prostitutes. I think the film could have been as funny (at least in the first half) and thought-provoking if they'd gone in a more Black Mirror direction (which is anything but blaxploitation).
6.5/10
