As a means of unseating the power of the Catholic Church it was a bit flawed because the only ones drawn to it were those who already had no time for Catholicism. Perhaps in time it would have spread to the rest of the populace but I don't think it lasted very long.
At any rate, it probably would have eventually accumulated many of the trappings of Catholicism that the movement initially condemned.
What do you reckon?

I doubt those in charge would allow it. Couldnt it just be state owned and the state would prohibit it from politicial activism or if not there could at least be measures in place stop it having the kind of power the catholic church had in Ireland.

If it were state-owned it would likely become a source of propaganda for the state.
As for measures they can be overturned or side-stepped. Look at how much influence American puritans have had in the US despite the checks against religious power.

well I think if it were popular enough people would be intelligent enough to have independant thoughts. Also the two main reasons the churches had so much power was what Max Weber called 'charismatic authority' (look it up if you dont know it( and the hoi polloi were afraid of the consequences of disobeying the church (being kicked out and/or being sent to hell( I cant see that happening with a Cult of Reason.

I have a feeling that if it lacked any sort of unifying creed other than a vague commitment to the principles of reason and atheism, it would never really catch on.

In terms of popularity I cant see it being anything more than a fringe thing that philosophers and other intellectuals promote. edit: I guess cuba or the soviet union could have maDe it big because of the power of the state
