Surprised he didn’t direct a film or two, especially during the 1970s with the influx of TV movies. I guess it wasn’t his thing.

Forgot about What Dreams May Come--I would give that a 4/10 too.
Matheson hated when people altered his dialogue. Pretty rare in fact to find it being done. Peter Lorre did it but he was ok with that. In his scripts, the dialogue is literally word for word. One interesting aspect of the Night Stalker--originally the coroner was supposed to be Indian (as in India). It is very specifically stated in the final draft. Two lines from the movie that are not in the script : "Bela Lugosi strikes again/Knock it off--it's her daughter."
Makes me wonder if it was added to make the cops look better because later in the story--they are presented so negatively. Although Charles McGraw's character is not in the final scene--he may have been in the script. I am thinking he was probably removed for Standards and Practices--that the police could not be presented so badly. And originally Sheriff Butcher entraps Kolchak--he tells him to stake the vampire.
The Night Strangler was originally supposed to be about Jack the Ripper but Matheson got second thoughts since Robert Bloch had done it already. When doing a screenplay based on the writing of someone else, he said that he never wanted to add his own ideas to it--he felt the job of an adapter was to convey the essential elements of it and not add his own ideas. Although in the case of Dracula, it differs quite a bit from the source.

In some ways I think the story is better than ‘The Night Stalker’, but the dialogue exchanges and cast in ‘Stalker’ always has me favouring it over ‘Strangler’. Definitely had a different sense of energy. So did the Jack the Ripper episode from the tv series had anything to do with Matheson’s initial idea for ‘The Night Strangler’.

I think the first movie feels more noirish and the second one is more light-hearted
McGavin felt the first was best and although he liked the character a lot (he said it was based on himself), I don't think he really wanted to do a series. From what I hear, he was more interested in having a shot at producing which he didn't really get. I saw an excerpt of Cy Chermak's recollections of the show and McGavin would come into his office and sit on a sofa like he did with Vincenzo but he would also threaten to have a fist fight.
I saw the Strangler first so it always had a special affection
"Kolchak. You were supposed to be in Puyallup for the daffodils!"
"Where? Vincenzo what's the matter with you? You ought to see a doctor you know, I'm serious. You sound terrible. It's awful."
"What are you doing to that poor man? I have never seen anyone so close to total stark insanity before."
