“I have been betting like mad on the Champions League final at Wembley, for sure, and I know the Euros are in Germany so if there’s someone out there writing a Hollywood movie, I want royalties because I'll be the Star of the Shows. I don’t need to think about it too much because it's going to happen.

“Bayern Munich? It’s definitely a shitload of pressure compared to what I felt at the other club. Of course we wanted to win things at Spurs but if you went a couple of games without winning then it wasn’t a disaster. It was just a matter of course and you were used to it. The feeling at Bayern is that you have to win every game - lose three in a row and you're put up against a wall and shot. We lost two reserve players last week from Regionalliga Bayern, blood everywhere. We ourselves won the first two games 4-0 and 3-1 and there was still talk about not being too happy about the way we played. I could hear the rifles being locked and loaded. But I’m enjoying feeling those different emotions, better to die in a blood-soaked Bayern shirt than to live in a no-stars white shirt.

“Just the experiences of having title victories, cup victories and a Champions League Final victories will add to my ego and of course my own personal domestic medals collection which for years has needed a boost, erm, in fact has needed a - first domestic medal. In fact any kind of medal. I'm not going to win anything with England. Me and the others are just going to have to lump that.

“As a competitor, when the England boys are playing in the Champions League and I am just crying at home watching it, I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that was really f***ing pissed off. Of course, I want them to do well – Kyle and all those guys to win when they are in competitions I am not in – I am not sure jealous is the right word but it does motivate me. And if you believe that load of old shit you'll believe anything."
