Rewatched the original Halloween and one scene makes me laugh. After seeing all the sequels and Myers being this unstoppable killing machine there is a point in the original that he takes his time to cut eyeballs in a sheet, put on a dead guy's glasses and dress up like a ghost for the lolz. Such an out of character thing to do after seeing the sequels. It's so odd.

Had to make a slight correction on the Progress Thread. I had a movie called The Devil's Candy listed as a first-time viewing, but then as I was going through my listings from previous October Challenges I noticed that I had already watched this movie as a first-time viewing for the 2017 Challenge. It's funny because when I was watching it this month I was thinking "Damn this sure seems familiar!" Oh well, I just moved it over to my rewatches. I tell you it's a pain in the ass getting old!

The Revenge of the Living Dead Girls (Pierre B. Reinhard, 1987)
So apparently this was filmed by a former porn director and it shows. While there is a plot here (toxic waste being dumped bringing three girls back as zombies to take revenge) it’s hilarious in how every woman decides to take off their clothes at any given second and is aroused by everything (my boss’s wife was murdered? Time to take my shirt off!). Honestly, it’s hilarious. The gore scenes are pretty well done, but really watch it for the comedy. 4/10
Lady Morgan's Vengeance (Massimo Pupillo, 1965)
The first half of this movie is a slow drag, made worse by the fact that it’s obvious what’s going on and has been done better many times. The second half though is a pretty fun little ghost story. It takes a lot of influence from British gothics, and once it picks up it’s a pretty decent movie. 6/10
August Underground (Fred Vogel, 2001)
One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a fake snuff film (with random shots of them being on a farm a couple of times looking at the animals just to add weirdness) that looks like it was filmed by a bunch of edgy teens for other edgy teens to be like “yeah, I saw that! So brutal!” It’s mostly just annoying. Seriously, half of the noises in the movie are just the camera man giggling. 1/10

I forgot how much I disliked Return of the Living Dead part 2. It’s really bad.

Tales from the Hood (Rusty Cundieff, 1995) This one is actually pretty great. It’s a 90s African American take on the classic horror anthologies (like Tales from the Crypt) complete with moral at the end. It’s fun with a lot of nice nods to classic horror while still being its own thing. My only really big issue is the use of god awful 90s CGI at the end that looks about as bad as Spawn (1997)’s use of it. Still, a lot of fun. 7/10

Midsommar (2019) A neurotic young woman, her boyfriend and other friends are invited to participate in a summer pagan festival in Sweden. The young folks get a lot more than what they bargained for as deadly events begin to unfold.
What was originally pitched as a slasher is converted into an artsy, insightful, stylish, and altogether fascinating folk horror outing by writer/director Ari Aster. Long, talky, but never boring. It gets more and more eerie as it moves along to a shocking conclusion, much in the same way as The Wicker Man (the king of folk horror) did.
Compelling performances all around, but the standout has to be Florence Pugh as Dani. She brings so much emotional depth as someone going through grief and trauma that she makes us really care, even when others around her get irritated by her drama.
I may be reading into it too much but perhaps there's some commentary about how outside cultures should never be disrespected, defiled, and treated with ignorance.
8/10

Totally Killer (2023)This is a fun time-travel slasher movie. It is about a teenage girl who goes back to the 1987 via a time machine to try and stop 3 other girls from being killed. I was disappointed with various aspects of the movie, but overall it was worth watching for being a bit more original than the usual slasher movies. I am also getting a bit tired of the 80s throwback horror movies even though this movie captures the feel of 1980s teen movies relatively well. I am a bit disappointed the movie didn't lean more into the differences between 2023 and 1987. It does it a few times when she first gets to 1987, but then it just stops. It does it in a funny matter of fact type way, which I appreciated. Vernon High School isn't subtle.

Watching Home Sick, one of Adam Wingard's first movies. There's a scene where 2000s B movie actress Tiffany Shepis finds her dead mom and proceeds to throw up on the corpse's tit and play around in her blood. I wonder if there will be a scene like that in Godzilla vs Kong 2.

My Soul To Take (2010; Wes Craven) Is this Wes Craven's worst movie? It has to be. It's even more sad considering that he also wrote this mess. It's a pathetic excuse of a slasher movie which also starts out in the worst possible fashion with a scene so over-the-top and terribly directed in which Raúl Esparza (normally such a fine actor) is introduced as a man possessed by the soul of a serial killer, going completely overboard. It's rare that I want to switch off a movie after 5 minutes, but had I actually done so here, I wouldn't have missed out on much. 2/10

Black Death (2010; Christopher Smith)Rewatched this fun little medieval thriller. Christopher Smith's career seems to have been stagnating for the past decade, but he used to be one of the most promising horror directors out there, never repeating himself, always doing intriguing and unusual films. I wish there would be more horror movies set in the Middle Ages. This one hits the right balance between naturalistic grimness (it's set during the Black Plague but doesn't overindulge on the gory stuff) and a sense of mystery. Great cast with a pre-fame Eddie Redmayne and the always reliable Sean Bean, plus Carice Van Houten who's basically doing a practice run for her part in Game Of Thrones. I had forgotten how the second half of the movie played out and was completely engrossed following the various twists and turns of the plot. 7/10

I remember really liking the setting and the tone of everything, but being underwhelmed with where the script went. Solid cast and production values for sure though. I liked Christopher Smith in this era too. Creep was taut and effective, Severance was kinda goofy fun, Triangle was way more interesting and well executed than it should have been, and then The Black Death was a fairly accomplished film even if it didn't really entirely work for me. Then... not much of note. A cheap Christmas movie, some directing for TV series, and a few movies nobody really cares about. The most recent one he made sounds like it has a lot of potential, but from what I've seen people didn't really care for it. I always thought that after the strength of his early stuff he'd have had the chance to make some bigger stuff for studios or something, but that hasn't happened.

The Deadly Blessings and Deadly Friends, Hills Have Eyes 2s, and probably some of those porn movies he made under a psuedonym... but yes, this could very well be his worst. It's a shame.

Well, I haven't seen any of his early work, that's why I wasn't sure. Strangely, and sadly, some of those movies are between his better early work. Like after Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes... and even after A Nightmare on Elm Street.
