Gonna add some kid's horror to the mix this year. A couple of Scooby-Doo films should fit the bill. COUNT 'EM! Fully intend to. What can I say? I like to live on the edge.

As the asshole who counted Beetlejuice one year and Ghostbusters the next, I say, yeah fuck it. Count them all! Personally, it wouldn’t bother me if Bettlejuice or Ghostbusters were watched for the October challenge. Even Scooby Doo animated movies. They’re horror-lite, maybe leaning towards comedy over ghoulishness, but still I can see the fun watching these films around Halloween. And you can get the kids involved with the October challenge! Start ‘em young. However a couple years back someone questioned if ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ could be counted. Now that would be pushing it. Sure you could bend the rules, but nah, that’s breaking them Good to know. I was actually thinking about watching Ghostbusters for the Challenge. Even though it's a comedy, it does have strong horror elements.

To those who have watched the latter Tremors sequels (A Cold Day in Hell & Shrieker island). I’m planning to watch Shrieker Island, but I haven’t seen the previous film A Cold Day in Hell. Does it matter… Or is it better to watch Cold Day before it?
After being underwhelmed by Bloodlines, Cold Day never interest me. However Shrieker Island did have me intrigued again.

I have just a quick question considering some of the Masters of Horror releases, and if they do count as a movie or tv-episode? Got a bunch of them earlier this summer, and was thinking about seeing them through, and looks like most of them have a runtime of 60 minutes.

MOH counted for the challenge back in the old IMDB days, and I think that applies here as well. Also, I think at this point, loosening the horror definition a little doesn't hurt. With participation seeming to wane a little bit year by year, anything we can do to encourage folks to jump in can't be bad. Like, if someone wants to count Ernest Scared Stupid or whatever, I see no problem. But if that same person chose Bridges of Madison County, we might have a problem. Dunno, just one anonymous dude's opinion.

I did have it in the rules, that Masters of Horror were the exception to the rule. They counted in the challenge on the original IMDb. Since they went for an hour & were a single story episode. I stop putting it in the rules, as no one ever watched the episodes for the challenge. I only ever recorded it once, and that was myself back in 2017. But since you’re thinking about them, others might too. So I’ll put it back in the rules outline on the original post.

Dunno, just one anonymous dude's opinion. Loosening the definition might help, but at the same time I don’t think we’ve ever been that stringent here on what counts as horror. Especially since on the original IMDb horror board, you could only count the film if IMDb had tag the film as horror. I think it falls on a couple things. You got to watch 31 films during the month. That’s a lot for some people, while also juggling other things in life. 14 of those must be first-time views, again might not be too easy. It was 16 dropped down to 14. So people could watch a few more of their favourites for the month. I think to make any more changes to the 31 films or 14 FTV’s, would spoil what this is… a challenge. Still we encourage everyone to join the fun, even if you can only watch a few films. Also the foot traffic to this site has dipped, especially when it comes to newcomers. You can see there’s a regular group of participants (15-20 people) turning up each year, but newbies less so. This is now the 7th year for this challenge on this site, and I think a lot regulars on other boards (Film general, classic, general discussion, sports etc) know of its existence. And finally I’m not too sure how many participants decided to stay on at IMDb1 to never return. By their own choice, or being banned. There a few names that usually participant that looks like their activity here is nonexistent, or dead. I noticed frjack Aka FatherHackett deleted his account today. So Hopefully he returns. As he was a returnee, after last appearing in 2019or2020? This year might be the first time we have less than 20 participants, and the last few years, true, the numbers are getting smaller. I would love to get 20+ people involved, but I still think the turn out is good.. 16 so far, with probably at least another 2 or 3 regulars to sign up. And those regulars who keep showing up every time do keep it alive, and makes it lively with their interactions. Even if they don’t think they can complete the challenge. I posted on Film General to drum up interest. So we’ll see how that goes.

Thanks for the replies, and I am glad that they count, since I remember a few of the ones I have seen earlier (will re-watch them as well) was really well made and highly entertaining. So looking forward to get through even more of them within the next few weeks or so.

Just picked up a replacement DVD region free player, as the one I had for the past 5-6 years, suddenly broke down last week. Got me a bit worried, due to the fact that about 70-75 percent of my horror movie collection (on DVD that is) is of region 1.
Wished it was easier ways to deal with that, but for as long as I can remember, there has been problems with getting help to make your DVD player into region free, while thankfully now there are some brand new products who is also quite cheap, that can take all kind of regions without any problems.
Have often wondered if people in America and Canada also has this problem when encountering certain horror films released on region 2, and if it is any easier to get hold of a region free player over there.

Being American I have never heard of a region free DVD player. Had to do a quick Google search of it. As far as im concerned a DVD player here is a one decive plays all unless you get into Blu Rays or like 3D type DVDs. I always used my video game devices to play my dvds and never had an issue when they started allowing blu rays to be playable. I may just be naive to it though. So I can't say I've ever experienced it.

Neither had I, until I picked up one called Andersson dvp-160, which is among the very first players that seems to appears when I search for region free DVD players. Before that, I had to call the shop where I bought the DVD-Blu-ray player, have them read me down the code so I could dial it into the option for region free player, and hell, you also had to stand within a certain distance meters of the tv screen, if not, it would not work. It all felt like a huge pain, and well, at least with the mentioned region free player, I do not need to bother with stress and annoying codes and standing so and so far away of the tv, for it all to work.

In Australia there isn’t much choice in region free bluray/dvd players. Only one brand available.. easy to get, but again only one brand. Been like that for a good two decades. I picked up on eBay from the states a region A Sony bluray player over a decade ago, which was refurbished to play all regions. Although i did have certain issues with region B German blurays, or the odd B region bluray disc still not loading. I no longer use it, as it was starting to glitch on me, but I’m now using Lazer, the available Australian release. Which I bought early this year. Though it looks like region locked discs have been discarded when it comes to 4K UHD releases. As they are all regions. And video game consoles over the last few years are usually region free too.

I couldn't help it and went ahead and started the challenge early So, I'm not counting them, but as this is the discussion page I'm just posting this here. I watched the following if anyone wants some thoughts on them:
Gangnam Zombie (Soo Sung Lee, 2023) Ghoulies (Luca Bercovici, 1984) Ghost Nursing (Wilson Tong, 1982) Kfc (Le Binh Giang, 2016)
And no, three movies starting with G was not intentional.

Looks like we got ourselves a Friday the 13th for this October. First time since the 2017 challenge.
I guess it’s easy to watch/or throw on something from the Friday the 13th franchise, but is there any other films set on Friday the 13th if you want to change it up?
Or possibly horror films which had release dates on Friday the 13th. Eg Evil Dead 2, Halloween 5, Happy Death Day, Cabin in the Woods, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Funhouse… etc.

I watched the following if anyone wants some thoughts on them: Gangnam Zombie (Soo Sung Lee, 2023) Ghoulies (Luca Bercovici, 1984) Ghost Nursing (Wilson Tong, 1982) Kfc (Le Binh Giang, 2016) And no, three movies starting with G was not intentional. Yeah, sharing your thoughts on the films would be cool. Definitely interested in the bottom two titles, and especially if KFC lived up to its concept. Gangnam Zombie (Soo Sung Lee, 2023) This Korean zombie movie is extremely silly and honestly not very good. It makes the really weird choice of setting it on Christmas Eve and doing nothing with that (other than characters mentioning it and talking about potentially seeing a concert later). I can recommend it to no one other than those who delight in really awful horror films. 2/10 Ghoulies (Luca Bercovici, 1984) A wonder slice of 80s cheesy cinema. I’d never seen this one before and I regret that. Had I seen it when I was younger, it likely would have been a favorite. It’s still fun even now, though without nostalgia I think I see more flaws with it. 6/10 Ghost Nursing (Wilson Tong, 1982) This Hong Kong horror film is about a woman with extreme bad luck who, after speaking with a shaman, agrees to nurse a ghost baby in order to gain luck. The plot is pretty bonkers, and it has some fun scenes including flying baby dolls ON FIRE MAKING "WAAAAA" NOISES AS THEY FLY PAST THE CAMERA. It's well worth a watch, though it sadly is a bit dull before we get into the weird stuff. Fortunately it more than makes up for it once it starts 7/10 Kfc (Le Binh Giang, 2016) I’m fairly certain that KFC as a company would not be happy to be associated with this film. This Vietnamese extreme horror has a plot, but it may take you a while to catch on to it. At first it just seems like a series of violent moments that all are somehow connected to someone eating KFC. It’s unpleasant to the extreme and once I figured out what was going on, I cannot say that it made it any better. The non-linear plot feels like it doesn't add anything except confusion and it probably would have worked better if it was straight forward. One could probably read a deeper meaning to this mess if they wanted to, but it’s honestly not good enough for me to want to bother. 3/10

Storm Warning (2007) - 5/10 A relatively well-made and well-acted Australian horror movie, but it is absolutely nothing anyone hasn't seen before and becomes tiresome well before the final act. It is basically another Texas Chainsaw Massacre rip-off. Wolf Creek did it better. A married couple are boating and get lost and stranded and end up on an island looking for help. They go into a house they find and encounter 2 brothers and their father who are a bunch of depraved psychopaths. From there it is just the married couple trying to survive.
