First viewings: A Special Day (1977):Two neighbors, a persecuted homosexual journalist and a resigned housewife, meet during Hitler's visit to Italy in May 1938. Despite their ideological differences they form a strong, unique bond. Sophia Loren gives her best performance since Two Women, and Mastroianni matches her equally, garnering an Oscar nomination for his performance. The film also received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language film. A real work of art in my opinion, beautifully directed by Ettore Scola. Highly recommended. State Fair (1933):This first version of Philip Stong’s novel is not a musical, but is an appealing, realistic slice of Americana brought to life by the vivid performances by Will Rogers, Janet Gaynor, Lew Ayres, and Louise Dresser under the sensitive direction of Henry King. Beautiful cinematography by Hal Mohr. It was nominated for two Oscars (Best Picture and Best Screenplay). I’m a fan of the 1946 musical, but I believe this is a much better film, and I’m glad I finally got to see it. Strongly recommended for those who love the cast, the genre, and the director. City Girl (1930):While in Chicago to sell his family’s wheat, the son (Charles Farrell) of a farmer meets a waitress (Mary Duncan), and the two fall in love. He marries her and brings her back to his farm, but her overbearing father-in-law and the malicious taunts of the sexist farm workers makes her life there nearly unbearable. An intriguing, provocative and moving drama by master filmmaker, F.W. Murnau. Also, it’s an early screen role for Ann Shirley, playing Farrell’s little sister (under her real name, Dawn O’Day). Strongly recommended, especially for fans of the director. Son of Lassie (1945):The sequel to Lassie Come Home stars Peter Lawford and June Lockhart as the grown-up counterparts of the characters played in the earlier film by Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor. When WW2 breaks out, young Lawford signs up with the British air force and Laddie (the son of Lassie) follows him and boards the plane as a stowaway. When they’re shot down over Nazi-occupied Norway, they’re forced to parachute out and end up separated. Thus begins their struggle to find each other again. Not as good as its predecessor, but it’s still quite an enjoyable family film, well directed by Sylvan S. Simon. Re-watches: Harlan County, U.S.A. (1976):Filmmaker Barbara Kopple’s Oscar winning documentary about Kentucky coal miners facing brutal opposition in a 1973 strike is a haunting, heartbreaking work of art. Rather than using narration, she chose to film the words and actions of the people themselves, which tells the story in profoundly meaningful ways. Highly recommended. (Available on MAX)

September 3rd marks the Centennial of the original 1923 release of the Broadway musical POPPY, which established W C Fields’ con man persona to the public. In view of this, I watched two adaptations of the play both with Fields: D. W. Griffith’s SALLY OF THE SAWDUST( 1925 YouTube) and the sound film POPPY (1936 Universal DVD) which used the OP Quote.

Painkiller (2023) mediocre mini-series about the family and the pharmaceutical company that started the opioid addiction crisis in the late 90s. Editing was terrible, and I did not the style it was presented.

I would suggest you watch last year's The Northman which the Hamlet story is supposedly based on. The Northman is a very good movie with a lot more action, and a bit bloody too.

Now, I've watched the whole film. It reminded me of L.A. Story.
