80TH ANNIVERSARY this year The OP Quote comes from: -FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (1943) The first film crossover mixes Universal’s Wolf Man and Frankenstein with Lon Chaney Jr and Bela Lugosi in the roles with Ilona Massey, Maria Quenspaya, Patrick Knowles, Lionel Atwill. First read of the film from the Crestwood Monster books, first THE WOLF MAN then FRANKENSTEIN in 1988, saw the trailer from THE WOLF MAN VHS and then its own Crestwood adaptation in June 1989 (it was among the first books I got from my City’s Library). I finally saw the film on Showtime in 1990. Amazon Prime
-THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1943) Universal color remake of the Lon Chaney film, turning Erik into an aging Opera violinist who gets scarred by acid when his work gets stolen (a plot device used in later Phantom films). Starring Claude Rains, Nelson Eddy, Susannah Foster, Fritz Leiber, and a rising Hume Cronyn. My first intro was in October 1988 when my late Uncle Ed showed me a still from the 1943 chapter of Clive Hirschorn’s THE UNIVERSAL STORY (forgetting to show me the 1925 chapter). In June 1989, I got the Crestwood adaptation from the Library. I think the book actually portrayed the father-daughter connection between the Phantom and Christine that was excised from the released film. I finally saw the film on Showtime in Good Friday 1990. Universal BluRay
Saw Parts Of: THE PHANTOM UNMASKED (2007) Documentary on the first three Phontom films. Universal BluRay.
UNIVERSAL 100 YEARS:THE LOT (2012)
