Being a diabetic really sucks and especially when one goes out to eat. My sisters-in-law took me and mr sunshine out today for lunch at Red Lobster for our combined birthdays and late anniversary.
I reviewed the menu online to see what I could have, since my blood sugar has still been too high after coming home from the hospital. Most everything I wanted had way too many carbs. I finally settled on shrimp scampi and a house salad. I wanted to try the new tequila lime shrimp, but the sauce made it too many carbs/too much sugar. Same thing with the crispy brussel sprouts...over 58 grams of carbs in one serving, more than I should have for sure.
I was satisfied with my meal, but if I added one of those biscuits or the baked potato that I really wanted, I would have suffered.
Hopefully my new diabetes meds will eventually kick in and I can go back to eating a semi-normal meal without raising my blood sugar. Fingers crossed!!

Catman knows this pain. Fortunately, his medication mix keeps blood sugar levels in range. Still have to be careful with peanut butter.

I feel so lucky that after about 1 1/2 years I finally got my A1C down to 5.6, I 've been cheating a little to much the past 2 weeks so now I have to go back to my stricter diet because the doctor warned me that its easier to raise your A1C than to lower it. I'm still going to treat myself to stuffing,a few XMAS cookies and some other stuff but I know I have to really cut down on carbs - I don't want to become diebetic so its back to living on spinach salad, hummus and Joseph's flax, oat & wheat pita bread.

WKM - I've been eating a lot of hummus and salads too, but I miss the pita bread with my hummus. I did find some pretty low carb pita crackers made by Town House but can't have very many of them. Eating a lot of meat and vegetables, no bread, pasta or potatoes at all. These are the things I miss. Eating a lot of scrambled eggs with veggies in them, but that still was raising my BS. They changed me from my Metformin and Glipizide to Jardiance, but so far it hasn't brought my numbers down to where they should be. My blood sugar was the lowest this morning that it's been since being in the hospital. I had a half serving of oatmeal and some bacon for breakfast, but haven't taken my BS yet. I need to go do that. Take care and I hope you enjoy your 'cheats'.

The regular size is 60 calories with 6 g. of protein, 9g. 0f carbs but since it has 2 g. of dietary fiber that = 7g. of carbs and it has 0 sugars. When I first started my diet, I looked up bread products I could eat and Joseph's flax, oat bran & wheat pitas were at the top of the list. You have to make sure you don't buy their regular pitas by mistake (I did once). I usually just eat half of the regular size, I put hummus and baby spinach leaves in the pita. I don't like oatmeal but a diabetic cashier I "know" at Publix, once told me that she was told oatmeal is bad for diabetics. I'm glad your blood sugar is going down.

"A normal A1C level is below 5.7%, a level of 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and a level of 6.5% or more indicates diabetes. Within the 5.7% to 6.4% prediabetes range, the higher your A1C, the greater your risk is for developing type 2 diabetes."

You were going low carb and ordered pasta? Haha.
I'm on the keto diet so I eat pretty low carb. It's generally easy to substitute stuff, ie grain rice with cauliflower rice.

I didn't eat any pasta. The shrimp scampi was just that....shrimp in garlic butter. I have had NO pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, etc. in ages.

I'm surprised they're telling you to avoid potatoes. I think potatoes moved into the "ok" section again. I don't really eat them because I think they taste like dirt, but I will occasionally. It took me a long time to start ignoring carbs. Generally 2 slices of bread a day, my sandwich at lunch. Don't really eat pasta either, not that I ate a ton before. My problem is sugar - boy do I want chocolate some days. My doctor would do cartwheels if I were at 5.5 average A1C. We're working for under 7 and I've been diabetic for over 10 years. Still haven't gotten there.

I was told to avoid potatoes, rice, pasta, most breads, pretty much anything with white flour. Sweet potatoes seem to be okay though. Carbs are harder for me to avoid than sugar.
