Introducing Kiriko Azusa. She is named for Major Kiriko Tsujimori from Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Azusa Gojo from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. She will go by Kiri. Turns out she still needs to be spayed, so she will stay at the shelter for the time being. They hope Catman can pick her up on Saturday. While there Kiri did jump up next to Catman and even sat on his lap for a few minutes. Some dogs barking down the hall put an end to that, but she seemed to be open to Catman's attention even in the place she found to hide. Catman brought home a blanket Kiri had been using and left it out for Katsura to inspect. She sniffed and sniffed for several minutes and seemed curious about who had left the scent.

That's bummer. They had to schedule Kiri's surgery for next Thursday which means she can't join the household until the 18th.

Today Catman had a nice visit with Kiri at the shelter. He gave her a toy mouse which she liked quite a bit. But after a few minutes, she decided she'd rather sit up on the bench with Catman. She enjoyed the attention and pets, and she sat on Catman's lap for several minutes. She even touched his nose with hers a couple times. Katsura also got to have a toy mouse which she attacked several times throughout the day.

Kiri has entered the building!
Katsura was cautiously curious when she checked Kiri in the carrier. For her part, Kiri was quiet, but she did stand close to the carrier door.
At the moment, Kiri is checking out the nooks and crannies in the isolation room. She did take a few moments out of her inspection tour to lie on Catman and purr.
More later.

Last night Katsura and Kiri had an unplanned face-to-face meeting when Katsura slipped into the isolation room as Catman was leaving. Fortunately, they both just sniffed at the air and looked at each other with no hissing or growling. Catman told Katsura she needed to leave, and she seemed happy to oblige.
Today Catman set up a screen in the doorway so the girls could get a good look at each other without being able to touch. Again they sniffed the air and studied each other quietly. Kiri's posture suggested she was ready to flee just in case, but it was Katsura who decided to leave first.
So far so good.

Kiri had a bit more excitement than anticipated today. When giving her her pain medication this morning, Catman noticed her spay incision was swollen. The vet was able to see her today to check what was going on. Fortunately the swelling was just normal healing, and the incision looked fine.
While there, the vet went over the bloodwork results from Saturday. Again everything was in the normal range, including the levels for testing heart function. The heart function result is particularly good to hear given that Kiri has a slight heart murmur. Not a complete clean bill as she will need to be monitored for signs of developing heart failure, but for the moment, she's an otherwise healthy happy cat.
The introduction to Katsura is going well. Katsura sits quietly on her side of the screen and Kiri sits quietly on her side. Catman had planned to let Kiri explore the rest of the house while Katsura took her nap in the bedroom, but the vet visit put that on hold.
So that"s on the agenda for tomorrow.

Kiri's first venture into the rest of the house was successful.
She was hesitant to come out of the isolation room at first, but after a few times back and forth, she finally made it to the foot of the stairs (a whole five feet). Another 10 minutes or so up and down the stairs before she reached the living room.
After that she trotted from room to room, ever watchful in case Katsura should somehow be hiding somewhere. She jumped up on Catman's lap a couple times but quickly jumped down to resume her exploration. She was quite interested in the sliding doors looking out onto the back porch, but for the most part, she kept on the move.
After an hour, she decided she was done for the day and retreated to the isolation room.
Katsura was glad to be let out of the bedroom and wandered around sniffing at the various things Kiri had rubbed up against. She finished her examination by fiercely clawing her favorite scratching post.

Today begins Kiri's fourth week since joining the Cat household. She has become much more comfortable being upstairs. Her favorite place when not on Catman is the pile of crumpled brown packing paper by the sliding doors. She is still a bit shy about being up on the kitchen counters, but last night, she jumped up when Catman served the evening meal. At step forward from having to be lifted up by Catman.
She loves playing with the toys and is especially fond of the scratching post with the track balls. Miko never understood why Katsura thought that was so much fun, but Kiri likes to watch Katsura bat the balls around and then have a turn herself when Katsura is done. She also loves her scratcher just like Miko did.
At night, she likes to lie on Catman's chest for an hour or so before returning to the pile of packing paper. She has a short session batting the track balls around before settling in for the night. Sometimes she comes back to the bedroom early in the morning and snuggles on the pillow up against Catman's face.
Katsura has become more accepting of Kiri, and they often sniff each other cordially in passing. However, when Kiri tries to entice her into a game of chase, Katsura shows no interest. She also shies away from Kiri's efforts to groom her face. At least there isn't any growling or hissing. They are on better terms than Miko and Katsura were at this same point.
Shortly after Kiri gained full access to the house, Katsura developed what appears to be a head cold. She sometimes wakes up coughing. The vet thinks it's nothing too serious, probably brought on by the stress of a new cat in the house, but she did prescribe an anti-viral medication. It's a powder you're supposed to sprinkle on food, but of course Katsura didn't fall for that.
The other option is dumping the powder in her mouth, but that really makes no sense. So Catman mixes the dose in some warm water and uses a syringe to squirt it into Katsura's mouth. She's not too fond of that, but the method works.
Sadly, every time they're doing something interesting, they stop before Catman can get any pictures.

Here is a nice photo of Kiri's tail: This morning Kiri tried again to engage Katsura in some play fighting. However, she picked one of the worst possible spots to make her attempt. Katsura was on the top tier of the cat tree, and Kiri was on the next tier down. When she reached up to playfully bat at Katsura, Katsura perceived the move as a threat and felt trapped since if she jumped down, she would be immediately vulnerable to attack. So she lashed out with a fierce display of hissing and growling with a couple paw swipes thrown in. Fortunately, her paw swipes missed, but Kiri got the message and hopped down to the floor. The incident does not seem to have soured their relationship. Later in the day, they were again quite cordial in their greetings by the food bowl and elsewhere.

Yesterday Catwoman came home for a visit. Once she got situated, Kiri peeked up from the basement to see what was going on. At first she was a bit hesitant, but when Catman assured her everything was okay, she came over and sniffed Catwoman's hand. She decided to be cautious and circled around to the far side from Catwoman and jumped up on Catman's lap to get a better view. Meanwhile, Katsura came up from the basement and trotted over to Catwoman. When Kiri saw all the attention her sister was getting, she decided to get in on the action and hopped over onto Catwoman's lap. She then preceded to let Catwoman adore her for ten minutes or so. They were both quite pleased with the interaction. For the rest of the visit, Kiri and Katsura stayed in the living room, and a few times Kiri hopped up on Catman and stayed there while Catwoman pet her a bit. A girl can't be too cautious.

Katsura and Kiri seem to have decided to be friends. The past few days, they have been playing games of chase, with Katsura chasing Kiri for a while, then Kiri chasing Katsura for a while. They have also been more willing to eat together from bowls placed in close proximity. This evening, Kiri jumped up onto the counter accidentally landing right in front of Katsura, and Katsura had no reaction other than to go back to eating her snack.
In other news, Catman has discovered that Kiri has a rather interesting quirk. Most cats have a limit to the amount of petting they will enjoy before becoming overstimulated and reacting by nipping the hand that pets. Kiri seems to not have any such limit. Catman can pet her and pet her, and she just snuggles down and purrs. When she does finally decide she should do something else, she calmly stands up, stretches, and hops down.

Catman has these soup bowls with a nice lid perfect for holding leftovers a day or so. The lid has a vent flap that detaches for easy cleaning. Yesterday when Catman was going to grab that flap from where it had been drying, the flap was gone.
Now it could have been taken by either cat, but since Katsura has never shown interest in the flap before, Catman suspected the culprit was Kiri. After looking around a while with no luck, Catman politely asked Kiri if she knew where the flap was, and if she did, would she please return it.
This morning, Catman found the flap on the floor next to the bed.
