Gerald Mohr, star of radio's The Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Adventures is probably my favorite Marlowe adaptation. Even Raymond Chandler himself didn't completely hate it.

Dick Powell reinvented himself as Marlowe in Murder My Sweet (1944) Dir. Edward Dmytryk. Populated with a variety of sordid characters in a bleak and disorienting night-time netherworld, former song and dance man Powell gives a solid and memorable performance, the first to portray in name, Marlowe... "I caught the blackjack right behind my ear. A black pool opened up at my feet. I dived in. It had no bottom. I felt pretty good - like an amputated leg."

Another vote for Dick Powell.
Moose Molloy: "Ever been in the can?" (prison) Marlowe: "Just a couple of overnight stays."
