I haven't seen it, but I know it's a popular dark comedy with a committed performance from Billy Bob Thornton. It had a sequel come out 13 years later which wasn't as well-liked or successful. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Bad Santa (2003) - 3 out of 4 stars"Outrageous, flagrantly foul-mouthed black comedy about a self-loathing reprobate who works as a department store Santa with a conniving African-American "elf" who masterminds a series of robberies. Thornton's life reaches a crossroads when he encounters a hapless, isolated kid who truly believes in Santa. Provocative look at the seamiest Santa who ever lived is audaciously funny, but definitely not for all tastes. Dedicated to the late Ritter, who's very funny as an uptight store manager. Cloris Leachman appears unbilled. Unrated 98m. version available on DVD. Also available in R-rated 88m. director's cut."

Love this movie. It's amazing that it was from the same screenwriters as Cats and Dogs.

Movie was a blast, I can't believe it's twenty years old. I also really enjoyed seeing Lorelei Gilmore screaming "F*#k me Santa, F*#k me Santa!"

Funny and surprisingly kinda touching. I grew to like it more on subsequent viewings.

Love this movie. It's amazing that it was from the same screenwriters as Cats and Dogs. With a little help from The Brothers Coen. Actually, I just learned from Wikipedia that they the told Bob Weinstein they "hate him" because of the casting of Tony Cox. Kinda weird. I don't know what Tony Cox did to piss them off so much but he's one of the best parts of the movie. They originally wanted James Gandolfini as the lead. He'd look better in a Santa suit, but Tony Soprano screaming at mothers that he's on his lunch break would be more terrifying than funny. Billy Bob is perfect in this, and would basically play the same character for he next 15 years it seems.

I can sort of see why they might have wanted to cast him, but I think his neurotic persona would have been all wrong for this character.

It’s very funny. My favourite part is where he tries to fix the Advent Calendar and puts all those weird things in it.
