Just looks like a remake of Twister with no Bill Paxton and no Philip Seymour Hoffman. Glen Powell is no Bill Paxton.

Glen Powell is no Bill Paxton. He seems more like Cary Elwes' character (Jonas, son of a bitch) only if he had assumed Bill's role. Does that make Anthony "Poor Man's John Leguizamo" Ramos the new Dusty?

actually looks pretty fun. People involved seem to have understood the excitement. Glen Powell is actually really charismatic with a Tom Cruise vibe so he is the perfect person to try and make a star.

Maybe so, but Powell, judging from the trailer, is doing first half Top Gun Tom Cruise when he should be doing Mission Impossible Cruise or something else more toned down.

Swim saw this. Yeah, no need to add an as S, it's pretty much just a remake. You'd think they'd go the legacy sequel route - have the main character be Jo and Bill's daughter or have Alan Ruck pop up or something - but I suppose the original, despite being a hit movie, didn't really leave much of a legacy. That is, except with me and my family. This was one of "our" movies that we'd watch over and over and quote at each other. As a kid, I would line up a bunch of Hot Wheels and imagine my own sequels to Twister.
But yeah, Swim immediately recognized the format of the original in this one. You open with a traumatic F5 incident, someone gets pulled out of retirement during a "tornado outbreak" , there's an incident with an F1, followed by twin tornados, a night strike at a public event, etc. The lead girl basically assumes both the Jo and Bill roles. And it turned out the movie DID have its own Dusty, but he's a borderline extra called (IIRC) "Duster" who isn't nearly as OTT as Hoffman.
One kind of interesting twist here is that the "protagonists" are the corporate sellouts this time, and the "antagonists" are the ragtag team up wild slobs. The lines of course get blurred as the movies goes along and you find out one is not so good and the other not so bad, but yeah.
One semi smart thing the original doesn't get much credit for is that the plot isn't actually about stopping tornados. The Dorothy Maguffin, at best, will just make it easier to predict them and warn people faster. This one however goes straight for creating a device that can magically kill a tornado. There is some kind of scientific explanation, but damned if I could follow it.
So it's pretty dumb and treads familiar ground, but Swim did have some fun with it, if but only because the original is such a seminal movie for them.

So there are no references to the first?

So there are no references to the first? -tornado scenes were cool, but many were unfinished, especially at the end. And they have the issue where the wind will often kick up trucks and trains but not the main characters -Powwll starts off as the Jonas before becoming the male co-lead. Or do you mean is he a star as in does he have the charisma and chops? I think so. I've liked him since his Ryan Murphy days -aside from the basic plot structure Swim mentioned, there weren't many outright references. There's a "Duster" who drives a minibus. Powell drives what looks like a decked-out version of the iconic red Dodge Ram in the original. "Dorothy" appears at the beginning. The main girl says "I'm not back" at one point (Bill's catchphrase in the original). The music score sounded like they redid tracks from the original with banjos. A tornado strikes a theater playing an iconic horror movie. That's about all Swim picked up.

So are any characters or events from the first film mentioned? The tornado scenes pretty much need to be great for this to succeed so we will see

There's not even a "we haven't seen tornados this bad since 1996!" The legacy sequel template is easy to make fun of, but I prefer some connection to the previous movies over no connection.

From everything that has been stated so far, I have to wonder why even it treat it as a sequel when you might as well have given it a different name. Name recognition, maybe?

I'm not sure if you read Swim's review, but they couldn't not call it some form of "Twister" without being accused of plagerism. It's clearly modeled after that film. But yes, the S is confusing, since it implies a sequel ie Alien/Aliens rather than a straight remake.

That’s kind of weird since you see Dorothy V while the last movie has Dorothy IV. You would think they would mention it was developed by Paxton and Hunt from the first but if this is truly a remake then makes sense. Also where is the review?
