Every news outlet is making a huge deal about Caitlin Clark breaking Pete Maravich's all time NCAA points total. Clark has 3,650, Maravich had 3,667. I'm not taking anything away from Clark. She's probably the best shooter in history. If there was a game of H.O.R.S.E between her and Steph Curry, I'd put my money on Clark. And it's impressive to break a record that's stood since 1970. But to make a huge deal, like it's Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's HR record, is silly. Caitlin Clark has played in 189 games, Pete Maravich played in 83. And, of course, Pistol Pete played in an era with no freshmen eligibility, no shot clock and no three point line. Give Maravich a freshman season and you give him another 1,000 points. Give him a three point shot, God only knows. Maravich had faults as a player. He was a ball hog. Clark averages three more assists per game. Clark plays more defense than Pete did, although defensive stats, steals and blocks, are not available for the 60's. And Clark played for better teams. LSU never made the NCAA in the three years Pete played there. But those were the days that all conferences got one bid only and Kentucky was awesome, it was the Dan Issel Era. but LSU was 14-12, 13-13 and 22-10 in those three years.
Once again, not to take away from Clark. I bet if the played a lot of top CBB men stars one on one, she would smoke them

I don't think she'd be able to get many shots off, one on one. It's not like she's posting people up out there. She's a hell of a shooter, but let's be real. If an elite male athlete's one job was to stop her from scoring (as it would be in a game of one on one), I don't see her getting much done. She'd kill them all in a 3 pt contest for sure. The number of games is the craziest thing about Maravich's record, never mind no three point line.

What magic made an 18 year old unable to play varsity athletics but a 19 year old fully capable? A lot of college coaches were vehemently opposed to making freshmen eligible in 1972. Colleges had to run JV programs, with coaches, assistants equipment, travel costs etc. It did hurt bigger programs. John Wooden and UCLA have one hole in their title run in 1966. They were 18-8,2nd to Oregon State in conference. UCLA's JV team had Lucius Allen, Lynn Schackelford a center named Lew Alcindor. Next year, 30-0

It's a bit clickbait'ish it's all about D1 breaking Maravich's record.
They aren't the same discipline - just as 100m Women's record is not Usain Bolt. Women's world ice hockey has a similar issue - since the 90's they've tried & tried to get more out of it than just Canada or USA gold & silver medalists... & yet most gold medalist record for ice hockey isn't going to be par with the men's competition history.
Canada's Christine Sinclair I think is world football most games & goals scored... at least they don't champion it with 'NOW MORE THAN MESSI!' or something. They do & they don't, she's got more than any other footballer ever, yet it's not like she's the apex player of all-time.

Lighter and smaller ball is definitely a help. Saw a guy and a woman sink 60 footers the other day He needed to put a lot of force into the shot, she didn't.
Gus Johnson, while the game was going on:
“Not only can fans wager on the point spread but they can wager on Clark’s prop bets,” said Johnson. “If you bet she’ll do it, meaning score the 18 points and pass Pistol Pete in the second quarter, you have to wager $185 to win 100, if you’re a gambler. And you hope she starts very fast or very slow, you can win $1,600 on a $100 bet if you think she’ll score 18 in the first quarter and you can win FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS. That’s right. $4000 on a $100 bet, if you think she won’t get it until the fourth quarter. ACTION, ACTION, ACTION, on Caitlin."

Its no different than any other record now days. The sports are so different now days than they were 50 years ago. We got more number of games, more/different rules, 3 point lines, etc. These records will never be viewed as equal to one another. Maravichs record as far as I can tell is more impressive but Caitlin Clark is a phenomenon right now so she is going to get all the praise and attention and imo its deserved. She single handedly is making people pay attention to a sport that barely anyone carred about. The women are getting far more attention than the men are because of Clark. There are no men's college stars anymore.

A friend, who a total BB nut called me and told me to watch the Final Four game between Iowa and South Carolina. This player, Caitlin Clark, is putting on a show that he had never seen any player before. And it was ridiculous. I think she had 45 points against an undefeated team. South Carolina almost could have play her 5 on 1 and she still would have found her points.

First game I watched was that final four game and then watched the Championship vs LSU. She is very entertaining to watch. I try and catch her games when they're on but more often than not they're on Peacock and im not paying for that service. Im not even a basketball fan either. Wish she broke Pete's record in a more flashy way like she did Plums, instead she got it on free throws.

If Maravich was such a pure shooter, why did he only average 78% from the line? 43.5% overall. He did improve to 82% in the pros and 44.1%.
