It's not a masterpiece like The Fly (1986), but it's a super-great and brilliant movie which surely deserves revaluation. It's underrated and overlooked.
I love Eric Stoltz's performance, it's very intense. The story is astonishing, charming and thrilling, plenty of ideas, twists and action. It's a pure sci-fi horror work. The final creature, Martinfly, is a must.
Chris Walas did a terrific job with this sequel. It's not a pale Hollywood-like rehash of the first movie, but a new imaginative movie in its own right. And it was a hit nonetheless. It grossed almost 39 million dollars wordwide, on a 7-12 million dollars budget. Also, it performed very well in the home video department.
By the way: if someone owns a copy of The Fly (1986), and can check a scene for me, please contact me via PM. Thanks.

Martinfly... I wonder if that was a cheeky nod to Eric's history with Back to the Future.

I went in with low expectations and liked it okay too. It’s certainly better than its 5.1 IMDb rating.

Martinfly... I wonder if that was a cheeky nod to Eric's history with Back to the Future. Hard to believe, but it's not a nod to Marty McFly. Cronenberg named Seth Brundle after famed racing driver Martin Brundle.

It's a great piece of 80s splatter horror.
The fate of the Bartok character stays with you too. He deserved it for the dog though
Plus Daphne Zuniga back then 🔥

Martin is only 5 years old in the movie but ends up getting laid. Ewwww. 'Big' had sort of laid the groundwork for that sort of thing the previous year, though.

Now, a bit of science lesson:
Houseflies have no mandibles. Housefly Maggots have mandibles.
Brundlefly has "side appendages" that could or couldn't be maggot-like mandibles, or maybe they are a new kind of auditory apparatus. Remember, it's not a viable organism.
Martinfly has mandibles. Of course, modified. With teeth.
Wondering: how does Martinfly manage to eat without a proboscis?
