The original film had the completely wrong approach for the subject matter, and Chloe Zhao was evidently not the right choice to helm that kind of project. I think this project might have been a good opportunity to invite someone like Sir Kenneth Branagh back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct, he captured the theatrical fantasy and wonderment of Lee and Kirby's original Thor quite well in the initial entry in Phase One.

I didn't realize it was ever in development in the first place. I liked it for what it was, but it's one of the least popular MCU entries, so no real surprise that we won't be getting a sequel.

According to another scooper who goes by MyTimeToShineHello, the project is not necessarily "dead", but it is being "transformed" into something else. Make of that as you will. They'll probably push the various storylines introduced by the film (including the post credits stuff) into other projects. There was a lot of fun to be had with these concepts, the movie decided to go a different way.
