MGM 100TH ANNIVERSARY The OP Quote: THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967) Robert Aldrich’s WWII Actioner of condemned soldiers going on a suicide mission, starring Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Clint Walker, Telly Savalas, Ernest Borgnine, and Donald Sutherland. Amazon Prime
RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS (1932) MGM’s fictionalized account of the final years of the Romanovs starring the three Barrymores Lionel Ethel and John. Infamous for a lawsuit by Prince Felix Yussopov claiming the film libeled his wife as a rape victim of Rasputin. Amazon Prime
MGM had a knack for remaking past films. Among its most remade was their adaption of a stage Operetta released 100 years ago this September. The first was a 1928 silent film (now lost). The second:
ROSE MARIE (1936) The second Nelson Eddy & Jeannette MacDonald film with Reginald Owen Una O Connor & early roles for James Stewart & David Niven. First saw parts of this TNT in 1992. Warner Archive DVD
ROSE MARIE (1954) The third became MGM’s second CinemaScope film starring Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Fernando Lamas, and Bert Lahr. Amazon Prime
30TH ANNIVERSARY SAILOR MOON S (1994) “Usagi’s Idol: The Graceful Genius Michiru” Japanese with English Subtitles.
40TH ANNIVERSARY THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1984) “A Scandal in Bohemia” The famed Granada TV series starring Jeremy Brett & David Burke with a special fidelity to Doyle and the Sidney Paget illustrations. Also starring Gayle Hunnicut as Irene Adler. I first saw this episode in the fall of 1992 on Arts & Entertainment. YouTube
50TH ANNIVERSARY NAPOLEON AND LOVE (1974) “Marie Louise” Napoleon marries the Austrian princess (Susan Wooldridge) and finally gets his son. He decides on one final big action before settling down: conquer Russia…
THE WORLD AT WAR (1974) “The Bomb” YouTube
FALL OF EAGLES (1974) “Dearest Nicky” The episode focuses on Russia 1904-05, as Nicholas II deals with advice from Wilhelm, a hemophiliac son, and a disastrous war with Japan. YouTube.
THE PALLISERS (1974) “Part Fifteen” YouTube
90TH ANNIVERSARY WE’RE NOT DRESSING (1934) Paramount film based on THE ADMIRABLE CRICHTONS Starring Bing Crosby, Carole Lombard, Leon Errol, Ethel Merman, George Burns & Gracie Allen. First saw this on American Movie Classics in late 1992.
100TH ANNIVERSARY SHERLOCK JR (1924) Buster Keaton fantasy about a film projectionist dreaming about being part of a film. I first read about this film from an article in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY covering the embargo on most of Keaton’s films by Rohauser. This would be resolved in 1995 with the release of THE ART OF BUSTER KEATON Series. Like most of the films, my first viewing was on American Movie Classics Keaton Centennial marathon on October 4 1995. YouTube
Saw Parts Of: SUPERBAD (2007) TNT Broadcast.

"The Wild One" 1953
"Only the Valiant" 1951. This is one of my favorite Saturday Matinee type Westerns from when I was a kid and I still love it.
