Not really my thing. I’ve come to the conclusion that Soderbergh isn’t for me, though I’ve only seen four of his movies.
The color grading is abysmal. It was done for narrative reasons, but it made about 80% of the runtime physically painful to watch.

I am actually a huge fan of the color grading of Traffic, but I can understand why it would bother some people.
I am a fan of Steven Soderbergh in general though. I love his style. Traffic is actually my favorite of his movies.

She wanted to see Cast Away, but I convinced her to see Traffic instead. I loved the movie and much prefer Traffic to Cast Away. That was our only date and I suspect it is because I made her see Traffic. I cared more about the movie I wanted to see than whether she was interested in seeing it. Worth it.

Yeah, gritty drug cartel/political drama is gonna be an uphill battle in the romance department. I managed to Netflix and chill Gone Girl once. I feel like I deserve an award for that. I'm lukewarm on Traffic. The color grading was considered revolutionary at the time but it is a little OTT in retrospect. On that note, 24 years later and I'm still not sure what Benicio did to win the Oscar. The daughter stuff is also kinda PSA-y, especially when she starts *gasp* fucking black dudes. But it's a decent movie overall.

Cast Away would’ve had her in a romantic mood. I love Cast Away. There were parts of Traffic I liked, but I thought it was just okay.

I really like Benecio in it, but yeah, winning over someone like Phoenix is hard to understand. It is essentially the movie that made me a fan of Del Toro though. I was indifferent towards him as an actor before that. I agree the color grading is in your face, but that is what I liked about it. It was OTT at the time even imo. When I think of Traffic I think 2 things. Thrilling drug drama and Mexico is extremely yellow.

Even taking other nomineees out of the equation (or people not even nominated, like Oldman in The Contender or Sam Jackson in Unbreakable) I'm just not sure what he even does in the film that stands out. He speaks Spanish and quietly broods. I'd sooner give him an Oscar for The Usual Suspects.

I haven't watched Traffic in a very long time, so my feelings about his performance would probably be different now. I just found him to be fascinating to watch for whatever reason. I am easily fascinated LOL.

Fair enough 😂 This didn;t not get me laid because she was my girlfriend at the time, but she was angry at me. This is a girlfriend I had for 10 year and luckily she didn't leave me after making her see Halloween (2007) at the cinema. I wanted to see 3:10 to Yuma when it came out and I she didn't want to be at home without me that night and she also didn't want to see that movie, so I convinced her to go see Halloween (2007) while I went to see 3:10 to Yuma. She hated the movie. She would bring it up once in a while after that night and she would say "I still get angry about you encouraging me to see Halloween."

I thought she would enjoy Halloween tbh. I hadn't seen it yet (I wouldn't have seen it at the cinema if you paid me to), but she is a big horror fan and not that picky when it comes to the genre, so I figured there was a good chance she would like it. I sort of found it funny how much she hated it, just because I didn't expect that.

Yeah I’d say you picked the right movie there. I respect a woman that’d see a movie on her own though. Not sure I’ve ever known one that would if there was someone in the building they knew lol.

I've only seen it once. I thought it was pretty good overall, but I'm with moviebuffbrad in that I don't really understand what Benicio did to come anywhere near an Oscar. He was pretty good, but really didn't stand out as hugely memorable to me.

He was pretty good, but really didn't stand out as hugely memorable to me. That is the difference. I think he is very memorable. He is one of the reasons I like the movie so much. If Del Toro wasn't in the movie it would drop a point for me. Granted some of that is him just being Del Toro, because he just has a naturally great presence as an actor.

I really didn't have much of an opinion of Del Toro as an actor prior to Traffic. He was good, but Traffic was the movie that moved him up to "actor worthy of my interest" level. I had already seen The Usual Suspects by that time, but only once and I didn't even remember him in it.
