I really enjoyed it. Not quite the best Apes movie, but still good. The motion capture remains stellar and I liked the characters. Being set centuries after the last movie, it was interesting how they made Caesar as some sort of religious figure and explored how some would twist his teachings.

It was awesome, I’d like to see it again before it leaves theaters. It’s probably 10-15 minutes too long, but other than that I don’t have any major complaints.

As it went along I started to think this was going to be an origin story for the villain in the original Apes, which kinda psyched me out for a more consequential film than it ended up being. Not that we need fanservicey tie ins for everything, but even on its own, it sort ends on an anticlimax. The human character does what she does and luckily none of the good apes are hurt so both sides can have a weepy goodbye and no hard moral questions are raised. I'm also pretty sure the villain has the same ending as Disney's Tangled...
I was fine with the characters themselves, though if we never see any of them again, I wont be too upset. As James alluded to, it was a clever idea to have Caesar as a messiah figure and especially having an ape using his image for their own ends as real life people do with God, but it could have been explored more.
All in all it's pretty decent, and doesn't hurt a near perfect trilogy the way Toy Story 4 did. CGI has probably never been better, you really forget you're looking at guys in mocap suits.

You think the CGI looks better than The Way of Water? KotPotA looks incredible, but I still put TWoW on its own level above everything else.

Plus the Na'vi are 10 foot blue aliens so we don't really have anything to compare them to as we do with real apes, so it's more impressive to me that the apes in this look so convincing.

I actually agree with both of your points, but that’s an advantage I just concede to Avatar. Also, the CGI water in ‘Apes’ is genuinely photo-realistic, but they took what Avatar 2 did to build that. I’ll have to watch both again to see which is better, but they’re probably 1 and 2 all-time for me either way.

It’s good. The CGI is phenomenal as usual, and I’m interested to see where they go next.

I loved all those things as well but my main problem is it felt it was lacking a bit with the characters, particularly Proximus and Raka who did not get enough screentime, and the ending felt too easy and anticlimactic to me. I also think it was a waste to kill Proximus instead of keeping him for the sequels. I suppose he could have survived 🤔

I thought Proximus was a fairly intriguing villain though, if not on the same level as Koba or Woody Harrelson.

I was a fan of Kevin Durand from his stint on LOST so was looking forward to him in this but since I don't really like watching trailers, I didn't know who he was playing. I had it in my mind for some reason that he'd be a human, like Nova's friend or something to show up later, until I realised he's probably an ape, then Proximus shows up.

This was pretty good, but the 300 year time gap doesn’t make much sense based on the state of the world and the humans in this movie. I wonder if the filmmakers even realized that and that’s why the subtitle in the beginning says “many generations later” instead of an exact year amount.

I would have even removed the "many" part. Not a big fan of movies telling us when something takes place via subtitles and prefer to work it out ourselves. But yeah 300 is absolutely ludicrous. 50 would have been better, or 100 max. I was surprised there were still so many humans remaining.

Hello guys, If you believe that Cornelius, Zira and CAESAR altered the past in 1973 and created a better Planet of the Apes (as seen in BATTLE), then these are my very detailed and well-thought POTA timelines based on the revisable timeline concept: TIME TRAVELLING ON THE PLANET OF THE APES potaplanetoftheapes.blogspot.comYou can also find detailed timelines for Burton's 2001 reimagining and the original 1974 TV series as well. Check my special files on all Planet of the Apes existing in movies and fiction. More to come! In the while, enjoy. Thanks.
