A Passage to India (1984) David Lean's final movie was beautifully captivating film as David Lean could. He went on the overlong 15 years hiatus since Ryan's Daughter before making this film. Though made in the 80s, it had the feel of those great epic classics of the 50s and 60s. Taking place in colonial India, the film showed the divide between the British and the Indian in the land. A young woman (Judy Davis) went there with her future mother-in-law to see her fiancee who is a magistrate there, and met an India doctor (Victor Banerjee) who bend over backward to cater to the British. Conflict resulted between them with bias by the British rulers towards the India doctor. Some part of the story was a bit weird, mysterious, and spiritually implied. I can imagine it can be frustrating for some viewers. I love this movie the first time I saw it back it was release. Judy Davis was so good, and I don't remember who she lost to in the Oscar. Turned out that was a competitive year for the leading actress including Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Vanessa Redgrave, and the winner Sally Field for Places in the Heart. Peggy Ashcroft deservedly won for playing the future mother-in-law.  |

INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) Second of the Indiana Jones film a darker affair that set up the PG 13 Rating. I think my first experience was from MUPPET BABIES Premiere Episode which used footage from the film as a set piece (The Basement of Doom as Baby Fozzie calls it. “Ooops! I forgot this fantasy is rated PG. We’re underage.”). I first saw the film on VHS in 1986. Unlike RAIDERS, which my young self watched earlier but had little memory (until I had a better viewing in 1991), I definitely had a better recall of the sequel from my first viewing. Paramount DVD

 Paths Of Glory (1957)After the failure of a dangerous mission during World War I, French soldiers are court-martialed for cowardice. When I first saw Paths Of Glory, for some reason I didn't think much of it at the time. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it, I don't know. But upon this second viewing I consider it a great film. Gripping, powerful, and emotionally shattering. Extremely well acted, especially by Kirk Douglas as the colonel who comes to the defense of the soldiers. Masterfully directed by Stanley Kubrick, demonstrating his usual camera techniques such as symmetric image composition. A perfect depiction of the insanity of war, as well as the hypocritical bureaucracy in which those in leadership hide behind their positions of power for their own well being. 8/10 |
