Batman Returns was very controversial for its time being criticized for its dark themes and not having a child-friendly atmosphere, which of course led to the series bringing Joel Schumacher on board to dumb it down. Why did Batman Begins (an equally dark film) not receive a backlash like this? Were people just more desensitized by then or do you think maybe Begins wasn't dark in such an obviously grotesque way that it didn't create such a visceral reaction?

Batman Begins is not as dark as Batman Returns.
Batman Returns has Penguin biting off someone's nose with blood squirting out, it has Batman lighting someone on fire just out of sadism, it has someone being electrocuted into a skeleton and it has Penguin attempting to murder a bunch of babies. It also has Catwoman in what is basically S&M clothes. The movie also just has a gross factor. Some complaints were that Penguin is just too repulsive looking.
Returns though also received backlash for not being a real Batman movie, but rather a Tim Burton movie pretending to be a Batman movie.

Why don't they just make a Batman Beyond movie and have it blow out all the boring non-sense in theatres?

It is actually kind of funny, because The Dark Knight is the one that is more comparable to Batman Returns in how dark it is and that it is the sequel. It is still less grotesque in it's imagery than Batman Returns though imo. There is also not one drop of blood in the entire movie. The last act has a guy with half his face missing attempting to murder a child in front of his parents and has the infamous pencil trick scene.

In addition to what Mouth said, Returns was targeted specifically toward children with happy meal tie-ins and whatnot. I also think our moral guardians more or less stopped caring about violence in movies by '05. That year saw the second Saw, first Hostel, Anakin Skywalker's dick burning off, and more controversy over gay cowboys than any of it. We were a bloodthirsty bunch after those towers fell.

That is a great point. Super cool with violence, but 2 gay cowboys and people lose their minds. Hmm, maybe Joker has a point.

How do you know, did you suck it afterwards? You obviously tried to because you know it wasn't there.

Other posters have answered this well. Returns is very heavy on the gothic vibes, a flamboyant Tim Burton movie that pulls out all the stops. Begins is a much more conventional action movie which draws a lot of inspiration from the comics. I love both but Returns is much more twisted.
Furthermore, parents groups were way more gun-ho about combating movie violence in the early 90s. Thinking back to the controversies surrounding the 1990 Ninja Turtles movie. Certain nunchuck sequences were actually removed from the movie for the UK release. It was the late 2000s before I saw how Shredder was actually killed in that movie thanks to UK censorship. By the 2000s standards had changed and there was nowhere near the same level of hysteria towards on-screen violence. The 90s were a lot more conservative than people realise.
