That's the hot take to end all hot takes. Do you not like Eddie Murphy? This was his breakthrough as a leading man. I don’t mind Murphy. I won’t pretend I’m his biggest fan or anything, but I think he’s funny. The first one is too campy and quirky for me. The direction is awful in the first as well. I also don’t like the soundtrack at all. Interesting. The first to me feels like a pretty straightforward cop movie with the exception of Murphy himself, which I think is what makes a lot of it humorous. I will agree the direction is kinda placid. Not surprising the same guy did Scent of a Woman. As for the soundtrack, you mean that iconic Axel theme? I didn't know it was possible not to bop your head to that.

I like the iconic theme enough, but the rest is so bad. I’m also not a huge fan of many 80s soundtracks. They immediately lower the stakes with how upbeat and corny they sound.

I think you want Beverly Hills Cop to be a movie it was never trying to be, a gritty action movie.

I watched it 9 hours ago....wee small hours in UK.
Watched the last few episodes of The Stranger and my odd body clock was telling me I ain't sleeping for a few hours so I plonked this on.
Good fun, great music, loud 0TT action, good performances....a tick from me. Made my smile and LoL a couple of times. The overuse of profanity is always tedious but apart from that I enjoyed it.
I still have plenty of appetite and enjoy pie and chips and popcorn..... don't need 5 star a la carte every meal.

I like the second one a decent bit and it’s because it has good filmmaking, better comedy, and better use of the soundtrack.

I think the comedy in the first is much better and the second is just retreading. It is also too concerned with being an action movie and I actually find some of it quite mean spirited. I don't think Tony Scott's style really fits Axel Foley. Maybe it is just because I like the more corny (as you put it) and less showy style of the original. I look at Beverly Hills Cop 1 as a light comedy with action in it, where as Beverly Hills Cop 2 is an action movie with comedy in it.

That’s an apt assessment of the difference between the two I’d say. I just prefer the action stuff anyway. I don’t find either of them gritty, though, which I’m fine with.

When you say the directing is awful in the first movie that doesn't click with me at all. It is one of those strange situations where it feels like you are watching a completely different movie from me. Or I just have more broad taste in directing than you, which I already suspect I do anyway. Awful directing is something like BloodRayne. Beverly Hills Cop is just light-weight directing.

Maybe gritty is the wrong word, but I know the difference between our perception of the movie now. I like Beverly Hills Cop as a goofy comedy where the characters interacting and the fish out of water stuff is the main draw, not the action parts. The stuff with Foley interacting with the Beverly Hills cops and his reaction to his surroundings is the life of the movie. With the second it is the opposite, because you can really only do the fish out of water stuff and the characters getting to know each other one time and here it feels more artificial.

Beverly Hills Cop is just light-weight directing. ”Awful” directing is too harsh. Extremely bland is a better way to put it. My issue with the first one is best summed up in the opening scene. The action and stunts themselves are awesome, but it’s directed in the most dull way with upbeat, goofy music behind it. It takes what should’ve been a thrilling and fun sequence and makes it feel lame and silly. I suppose I get the appeal more after talking in this thread (Murphy is fun and the entire thing is just for grins), but I still don’t really see what makes this so much better than any other crime comedy.

I don't find the directing to be all that bland. I mean sure, by comparison to Tony Scott's style it is bland, which would mostly be the editing and cinematography. The style of the first BHC is all in the performances, location, music and the writing. I don't like the movie as much as many people, but it is still one of the better action comedies imo. I think you are missing the main reason though. Eddie Murphy IS the reason it is seen as better than most action comedies. The character of Axel Foley is why the movie is remembered.

I found it was enjoyable and as most will probably mention, it's at least better than III. The action scenes and humour are on point and Murphy is still charismatic and fun in the role. Wished we got more of Reinhold though.

Haven’t seen it yet but this seems to be one of the better received legacy sequels

Just watched it last night (and I rewatched the first two and watched III for the first time as well)
It was okay. Slightly above average. An enjoyable watch but far too safe and with too many tropes and callbacks.
