Madame Web (2024) My first 2024 film, and it is not a good one. There are some bad films that could have been great. Not this one. This movie is unsalvageable. It is so poorly written that scene after scene were head scratchers. Practically all the female characters were very annoying. The way the movie is set up, I see the film makers were betting on a franchise. We can safely say that it ain't gonna happen. I do say they did put a great Cranberries song at the end credit.  |

MGM 100TH ANNIVERSARY
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940) Katherine Hepburn made a triumphant comeback (and a MGM contract) with this adaptation of Philip Barry play, which MGM had to include her in the adaptation (helped that she OWNED the play rights, thanks to Howard Hughes). Also starring Cary Grant, Ruth Hussey, Henry Daniell, and James Stewart (winning MGM’s sixth and penultimate Best Actor Academy Award). ok.ru
HIGH SOCIETY (1956) To paraphrase ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: “What do you get when you remake THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, cast a true Philadelphia blood (Grace Kelly), add Cole Porter songs, and move the plot to Newport for the Jazz festivals?” This musical with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm, Louis Calhern (his last film), and Louis Armstrong. This one was among two films that were the first MGM movies my family owned on VHS. ok.ru
KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE (1953) MGM’s first CInemaScope film is about the Arthur Legend (de-magictized aside from Excalibur, with censor-mandated liberties: incest-illegitimate son Mordred is now Arthur’s brother-in-law and the Lancelot-Guinevere affair is emotional only). Starring Mel Ferrer, Ava Gardner, and Robert Taylor (in his second “Richard Thorpe-Medieval Trilogy” film). ok.ru
THE CATERED AFFAIR (1956) Bette Davis makes a sole MGM film as a bitter mother trying to cater her daughter’s wedding. Also with Debbie Reynolds, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Taylor. ok.ru
TARZAN AND HIS MATE (1934) This film gets a trifecta in Anniversary: It premiered 90 years ago last April. Its Studio pedigree places it with the MGM Centennial. And July 13 is the 100th Anniversary of Johnny Weissmuller winning Swimming Gold medals for the 1924 Paris Olympics (hence my use of this film, with its underwater ballet). The sequel to TARZAN THE APE MAN has Neil Hamilton’s rejected suitor returning to the jungle to reunite with Jane and Tarzan. A rather racy affair with Maureen O Sullivan’s loin cloth (she even displays a rug shot, even though her nude swim was by a double, Weissmuller’s fellow 1928 Olympic athlete Josephine McKim). I first saw this on American Movie Classics in May 1999 as part of a Tarzan marathon hosted by Brendan Fraser. ok.ru
