There are some childhood movies I will always defend (Godzilla 1998, The Phantom Menace) but not this one. Yikes. This is filled with totally random unfunny humor, mean spirited moments, a terrible portrayal of Dr Claw, and absolutely HORRENDOUS editing (apparently the movie was massively cut down to a brief 70 minute runtime). Also some weird foot fetish plot (the MacGuffin is...a robotic foot). Matthew Broderick is also horribly miscast as Inspector Gadget. A misfire on almost every level. The WarGames reunion with Broderick and Dabney Coleman is pretty cool I guess though, and Stan Winston's animatronic gadget effects but that's it. Guess 1999 had too many good movies, so they had to release this to try and balance it out.  |

I wonder why Hollywood thought Matthew Broderick would be saleable in adult roles after the 80s were over. The man was a perpetual manchild and unfunny to boot.

Loved it when I was a kid. I rewatched it last year for the first time in probably 15 years or so, and as expected it doesn't hold up particularly well for me.

He really peaked at Ferris Bueller, didn't he?
It's funny because after seeing that movie it always seemed to me like there shouldn't have been anything he couldn't do, but I always figured the writers/producers/etc. just couldn't figure out what to do with him. I mean how WOULD you top a role like a teenager who bends the will of a whole city to align with his ditching school?

Great film, and Broderick wasn't bad, but he just feels miscast in that role. |
