Think I watched this on TV as a kid but don't remember too much. Apparently, producer Steven Spielberg was so disgusted with the film's quality that he removed his name from the film. He was the one who hired Jan De Bont to direct, who made Twister for Amblin. While Twister is awesome, it is a totally different beast than what should be an atmospheric horror movie. Could possibly have been the studio also who felt bad CGI ghosts was the type of horror people wanted.  |

I like the cinema poster but not the movie. It's very much a "more is more" film, especially the set size & designs are total overkill. The castle never feels like a real place but more like some kind of huge but utterly fake amusement park "haunted house".
Liam Neeson isn't at his best, but he's still the only one with even remotely interesting character to play.
It's also really lazy how they did a lot of basic stuff with CGI (that infamous chandelier!) instead of bothering with real props.

What’s funny is that the tagline is a lie. Instead of Hill House being some negative place, it’s another “bad people tainted the place” haunted house.
“Purgatory’s over…You’re going straight to Hell!”

I remember Scary Movie 2, which parodied it, more than the movie itself.
Some interesting bits of trivia - Stephen King wrote a draft for the movie, but when that fell through, he reworked it into his novel Rose Red. Wes Craven also developed another version around the time but ended up dropping out to direct Scream instead. The movie also had two cinematographers, the first being Caled Deschanel (father of Zooey and Emily Deschanel) who left due to creative differences but still was able to film some of it.

4/10 I like the cast and there are a few scares but its also pretty poor by making it a generic ghost film while the original was more of a mystery.
