1994 was quite a year for star Jim Carrey thanks to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "Dumb and Dumber", and this entertaining film. Carrey seems to be in his zany element when he's got the mask on. The CGI used in this film seems to have held up well and greatly enhances Carrey's performance as our masked hero. Of course, this movie was a breakthrough and debut role for co-star Cameron Diaz (hard to believe she was only 21 at the time of filming). I've never seen the infamous sequel which came out nine years later. From the director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3", "Eraser", and "The Scorpion King". Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Mask (1994) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"A wimpy bank clerk discovers a mask that turns him into a sizzling Superdude who acts out his alter ego's fantasies. Pretty entertaining, though it's seamier (and more violent) than it needs to be, and has some real lulls during its plottier moments. The already rubber-faced Carrey is aided and abetted by stunning digital computer effects, inspired by the manic 1940s cartoons of Tex Avery. Based on the comic book. Followed by SON OF THE MASK and an animated TV series. Also available in PG version."

Loved this movie as a kid. Haven't watched it in ages though, tomorrow's a good day for that.

"That's a spicy meataball!"
Dorian looked scary when he has the mask on and was shooting bullets from his mouth.
"Those pajamas are impossible. This really happened."

What I love about this movie is despite the Mask character being so cartoony the villains are deadly serious and Dorian Mask is even kind of scary. And it works Except for the Mask's "Oscar moment" where the one henchman breaks down in tears while Dorian gets stage fright in front of the invisible audience. It's curious that they otherwise have no real reaction to a shape shifting, supernatural troll running around causing hijinks, nor does anyone else really. This was probably one of my most rewatched movies as a kid, and Diaz my first crush. We haven't mentioned him, but is there a better dog performance in a movie than Milo? The scene where it looks back and forth at the guard's eyes while sneaking the keys is unreal.

Hell Dorian Mask was supposed to murder the greedy journalist character on screen. They cut it out because they felt "yeah that's maybe too much for this film".
Also the director made the excellent Blob remake so he has a solid horror background.

Just imagine if he had the mask when Butch and Marcellus were in the basement.

It's interesting that the director, who was hired because of his experience making horror movies, decided the best way to go about adapting the subject matter, which was dark and violent, was to make it into a comedy. And the success speaks for itself. Strange how Chuck Russell never has made another comedy since.
