Is strange. It feels like I have transported back to the mid-2000s seeing the trailers for Trap.
I have always liked him as an actor. Not much range (his best performance is in Black Hawk Down), but he has a likable screen presence and had enough talent to hold up the movies he leads. I am old enough to remember when he first came on the scene in The Faculty back in 1998, and for the following 10 years he had mainstream movies that he was the lead or co-lead in.
Then he just seemed to disappear around 2007 until Penny Dreadful (2014), which I didn't watch or even know he was in until I checked his filmography. Then Guy Ritchie and Christopher Nolan cast him in supporting parts in the 2020s. In between 2007 and 2021 he still got work in movies, but in straight-to-video movies.
I wonder how long his resurgence will last. While Trap has been getting mediocre reviews, critics have been praising his performance in the movie.

Yeah he’s good in Trap. It seems like he’s having a lot of fun too, which is always good to see.
I haven’t watched much from him, but his three movies over the last few years (Wrath of Man, Oppenheimer, Trap) have impressed me with his performance.

Black Hawk Down is a good one, as long as you don't mind a movie that is almost entirely battle scenes.

It’s on my watchlist, I have a feeling I’d enjoy it.

The Faculty definitely felt like a star making performance, he carries it to the point where he's front and center on the poster despite Wood having a bigger role and name recognition. I believe they even gave Hartnett Halloween H20 off the back of it (though H20 came out first).
His disappearance was odd. I wonder if he burned too many bridges - he famously turned down both Batman and Superman. Or just fizzled. He lost Brokeback to Heath or Jake or both.
As for best performance, I wouldn't really put Black Hawk Down in the running. Just kind of Joe Action Man. He's great in his Black Mirror ep, and actually gives my favorite supporting performance in Oppenheimer, over RDJ. Other contenders would be Faculty again, or his high school Iago in O.

He has the good dramatic parts later in Black Hawk Down when he is talking the dying soldier and his final monologue that closes the movie. I don't remember his performance in O at all, so it very well could be his best performance. I haven't seen Black Mirror. I made a mistake when I said Black Mirror in my OP. I meant Penny Dreadful. I haven't seen either, but Penny Dreadful is the one he is in 27 episodes.
