Didn't that synthetic get burned by a flame thrower in the original?
Anyways if you want something that captures the feeling of the 80's this is the movie for it. The characters mirror the actions in the first alien movie. The story beats are identical.
Not a very large body count more of a focus on story. Lots of suspense and ticking clocks. The characters are resourceful when they need to be.
It's as if the whole thing was a metaphor for birth trauma and mother issues, while being chased by a giant penis dinosaur. Lots of blood lots of goo.

So about what I predicted. Entertaining but derivative. Fun but familiar.

Honestly I'd rather just watch the original again than some rehash of it.

He identified himself as Science Officer Rook, the original was Ash.

I have mostly fond things to say about it. They really captured the aethetic of the orignal, and made the Xenomorph scary again. I also liked David Johnson/Andy, a great addition to the franchise's andorid lineup (except they messed up the alphabet scheme - Ash, Bishop, Call, David...Andy). Other characetsr were so-so, and vaguely moronic ("What's a heat signature?"), but what else is new since Prometheus? There were some really cool set pieces as well, like the zero gravity acid sequence. As for things I wasn't so fond of, it seemed like the alien life cycle was on fast forward. That Asian chick had the facehugger on for like 2 minutes. I thought them successfully pulling it off mid-incubation was interesting, and was curious how that'd go...except she gave birth to a completely normal xenomorph, also in the span of like 2 minutes. It took John Hurt way longer than all that in the original, he even had time to sit down for breakfast. Maybe the lab they were in experimented on the xenomorphs to speed up the process? In any case, kind of a waste of suspense and buildup.
And while it was kind of neat to see deepfake Ian Holm, it was also kind of garish, especially as it went beyond a cameo and "him" being like the 4th lead.

yeah I dug this. Too many callbacks. The "get away from her you bitch" line was embarrassing the deepfake Ian Holm was completely unnecessary (should have just brought back Fassbender) and that British wanker was so annoying that I almost cheered when he died, but it captures the mood and feel and suspense that I want from an Alien film. The film also looked gorgeous and better looking than many bigger budgeted films. A love letter to the franchise. And Cailee Spaeny. I am in love. I will follow her career with great interest. For follow ups, please bring her back and develop her character more.
HOWEVER, I do wonder if Ridley Scott is trying to retcon Aliens. That might deserve its own thread...

I got super whiplash from that because at first I cringed hard, but the awkward way he capped off "... you bitch ..." swung it right back around to be kinda awesome. In what way are they retconning Aliens?

In what way are they retconning Aliens? Ripley is supposed to be in cryo for 57 years before she's found and yet CGI Ian Holm explains that the events of Alien were 20 years ago and the sole survivor blew it out of the airlock, which they can't have known unless Ripley told them and then why would they go after the Nostromo wreckage when LV426 already exists and there are hundreds of eggs in a crashed ship? And where do all the eggs come from when they are supposed to be from the queen? Scott has also said he shouldn’t have let the franchise go after the first movie

Ash was a company agent spy--having more copies of him around works against the secrecy angle. That's one of the things about Aliens which annoys me "was it an older model? A2s were always a bit twitchy."
The impression one gets from the Nostromo crew was that robots were not something they routinely saw. Unless they had them in secret use and this came out later, and Bishop was familiar with it.
Spaeny seems like a very energetic performer--she does look very young at times, or a midget. The impression I get from the casting of this is that they split Ripley in two--Andy is one part--Rain is the other.

Scott has also said he shouldn’t have let the franchise go after the first movie As I understand it, they lost the signal on LV426 which is why they don't send anyone back until Aliens. Don't know how they knew Ripley blew the xenomorph out of the airlock, but maybe it's just another one of the movie's plotholes. I pointed out the hyperspeed of the alien life cycle in this, and Prime made a good point about how it doesn't make sense to use Ash as an undercover bot if there's a bunch of Ian Holms running around.

yeah I dug this. Too many callbacks. The "get away from her you bitch" line was embarrassing Indeed. I think they referred to every single installment in some shape or form except for maybe Alien 3. Yeah the Aliens line was really weird, but it kind of worked somewhat due to Andy's great delivery. He somehow made it less bad. With a less capable actor it would have been insanely cringe. But still, very unnecessary.
The Ian Holm CGI was a shame. I don't understand how they could have seen that and thought it was okay to put out in the final product. Like if you were dead set on having him in your movie, fine, but at least put him in some darker lighting and with less closeups to help disguise the poor CGI. But it's just right in your face. I think this could be a case where a special edition with improved CGI would be a good idea. I'm not sure about Fassbender being used instead though. I guess it would have worked, if he were a brand new model and not Walter or David, but I wouldn't have wanted David in it, as he definitely needs his own movie, if they ever get around to Covenant 2.
Agreed.
Me too. Never heard of her or David Jonsson before but they were both amazing and would love to see more of them.
How so?
