Both M. Night Shyamalan and his daughter directed a movie this year and both are terrible movies, though his daughter's movie is more interesting and is at least ironically entertaining during the finale.
Trap is 60% promotion of his other daughter's singing with a thin and super cliche script written around it. This is one of those movies that gets worse as it goes on. It is especially bad when his daughter is required to act.
On the plus side it is well-shot and Josh Hartnett is good in it. His is actually quite fascinating as the killer, which made me even more frustrated. I wish his character was in a good movie and not this POS.
4/10

I thought it was decent by M Night standards. It's 100% a demo tape for his daughter, but she's actually pretty good in it. Hartnett is a blast, it's everyone else that sucks. Of course, it's hard to look like a capable actor (or even a human being) while spitting out dialog written by M Night. What I liked about this movie is that unlike most of his catalogue, it seemed to understand it was completely idiotic.

That sounds like a government plan.

The message of his first movie was "white guy doomed-he don't know it."
The message of this one appears to be "white guy doomed-he don't know it, and buy my millionaire daughter's music."

Well its M. Night Shyamalan. Guess that enough said. I actually have enjoyed most of his movies to one extent or another. The exceptions are Trap, The Happening, After Earth and The Last Airbender.

There are 3 I like of his. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and The Vist. His worst film In my opinion is After Earth. I found that one extremely hard to even finish.

The ones I fully like are The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village and Split. Glass, The Visit and Knock at the Cabin are decent and Lady in the Water and Old you might call "guilty pleasures." I agree with the majority that his worst move is The Last Airbender. After Earth was hard to watch too, but largely because of Jaden Smith.

Shyamala lost his touch. I actually liked his movies up to and including Lady in the Water, but after that, it's almost all been shit. The Visit was just okay, and Split was actually pretty good, but other than that...yeah.

I’m comfortable saying I liked it, but it’s nothing special. The wild premise and Hartnett make it worth a watch.
It begs the question: had he not forced his own daughter into a role (that ended up way too pivotal near the end), would this be a better movie?
I think the answer is a somewhat obvious yes, which is disappointing.

I think the answer is a somewhat obvious yes, which is disappointing. I didn't even find the premise THAT wild. The premise of The Watchers is legit wild, which gained it a point for me. The first half of Trap was alright. The second half is really bad imo. If not for the blatant nepotism and bad acting by the 2 main supporting characters I would rate it maybe 5/10. It would be one thing if his daughter was a good actress, but she isn't. So when she becomes front and center for 20 minutes during the second half it gets really cringe-inducing. There is the scene where the movie takes a break so that Shyamalan's daughter can play an entire song on the piano and that was the last straw for me. Once the characters leave the stadium it is just one cringe-inducing scene after another imo.

I'm perhaps kinder to Shyamalon than some. Haven't seen this, though.
