I don't find anything about it offensively bad outside of it is just being boring. Everything about it is just so thin. The plot is very simplistic, the action scenes are generic shoot-outs for the most part and the characters aren't interesting. The acting is serviceable at best. The best thing about the movie is the backdrop, but it still isn't anything we haven't seen before. If you have seen the Fallout TV series, that does the worldbuilding much better and is a similar looking world.
The whole movie feels like they took a bunch of stuff from other sci-fi post-apocalyptic movies and threw it all in a blender and that is what we get on the screen. There is no ambition or originality to the movie at all and Cate Blanchett is distractingly out of place in the lead role. The movie that Borderlands reminds me of most is Tank Girl, which is a significantly more entertaining movie.
I just watched Trap (2024) and while I think Trap is more disappointing, more frustrating and has lower lows, that has one thing going for it that Borderlands doesn't - a compelling central performance.
