1931
Lugosi is just too iconic in the role for me to think of any other version.

Lugosi and even if he's not their favorite, I'm kinda dubious of anyone who doesn't think of him first.

Lugosi and even if he's not their favorite, I'm kinda dubious of anyone who doesn't think of him first. Cultural differences, at least in my case. I grew up with some kids' magazines that had sp00ky stories about ghouls and goblins and such, among other 'articles' for kids, and the Dracula images used were always from the Hammer / Chris Lee movies. I don't even like Hammer productions that much, but they tend to look very good in pictures. Also, I don't think the Universal classic monsters are such a huge thing outside US in general. I saw more Hammers from TV as a kid, the Universals were shown only once or twice, and here they were not released on video at all.

Dude was a cereal mascot and hung out with Scooby Doo. He's also the short hand reference for anyone attempting a bad Eastern European accent. "You sound like Dracula".

Well Christopher Lee popped into mind first. but it's possible that I had a quasi image of Lugosi right before that.

Lugosi and even if he's not their favorite, I'm kinda dubious of anyone who doesn't think of him first. I'm Finnish, and Lugosi is relatively unknown here. I saw the Hammer films as a child, and I still have vivid memories of watching them with my cousin on a summer vacation. These films have also been broadcasted several times since then. During my lifetime (I'm 44) the 1931 movie has aired only once, and I was already an adult by then, so it didn't make such a big impression on me.
