it received rave reviews and won Best Picture but there has been a small backlash over the years it seems from people who find it too unnecessarily bleak and "Oscar baity". I do really like it and think it has great performances, is hard hitting, and I like that it shows the potential consequences of such a barbaric sport. The only real problem I would say is that it is ridiculous that the other fighter could basically murder the Maggie Fitzgerald and not seem to get any consequences. Should have at least had some lines that explained that she was disqualified or facing legal action. Definitely a flaw.

Nay
The concept was flawed---there is NO WAY she would sit around for years waiting for someone to come along to help her learn instead of shacking up with a boxer if she wanted it so badly.
Second--her family was the most implausible collection of white trash stereotypes imaginable--making it impossible to believe she would defend them like she did. That's was overboard.

Every BP winner gets backlash, I don't think this one gets that much more than average.
And it's a yay for me. Not my favorite movie of 2004 but not a pain in the neck that it won.

Yay. Gets way too depressing, even for me but still a good film.

Yay. Gets way too depressing, but still a good film. I felt exactly the same.
