Still #1 on the IMDB Top 250 after all these years. People either love this movie, think it's great, a masterpiece, etc., and there are those who think it's overrated (but generally still good). I saw it once many years ago and thought it was good but not a masterpiece. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - 2.5 out of 4 stars"Straight-arrow banker Robbins is railroaded for a double murder and sent to prison for life in the late 1940s. Fellow lifer Freeman and his buddies eventually come to admire Robbins' moral code--and his ability to get things done, in spite of a heinous warden and brutal prison guard. Widely praised film is well crafted but terribly overlong, and (like much of Stephen King's non-horror writing) hollow and predictable. First-time feature director Darabont adapted King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."

Amazing that there was no draft behind the poster.

Amazing that there was no draft behind the poster. Andy lucked out in a lot of ways but it made for some movie magic. That's a spicy 2.5 from Leonard. Is this his hottest take? In case anyone doesn't know the story of how Shawshank became #1 on imdb, when The Dark Knight came out it skyrocketed to the #1 spot which was previously held by The Godfather. Godfather fans retaliated by downvoting TDK, and it became a war between the two fandoms until they basically cancelled each other out and #3 spot Shawshank snuck into #1. So I don't take its placement too seriously.

IMDB has skewered its present day legacy. I for one thought it was a fine movie, though overlong, sappy, & predictable.
C+
Cut 25 minutes, axe some of the syrupy narration, & maybe not have Andy some grinning mystical being the entire time? Personally, I've never enjoyed prison movies at all - the drab garb, cold buildings, unappealing supporting characters... 2.5hrs I can find better spent anywhere else.
