I haven’t seen Escape from LA. I understand the appreciation for Air as a mellow sports flick, it just didn’t do anything to make it feel impactful imo. It felt like it was trying to go for a Moneyball look, but it wasn’t as streamlined or able to make a “boring” subject interesting. I think I like gonzo direction more than the average person. I like when directors go for it rather than just sitting a camera down on stationary people talking. That’s what Air felt like to me. I think you mean just great directing rather than gonzo directing. I wouldn't call Robert Altman a gonzo director for example, but he is a great director. When I think of gonzo directing I think of like Michael Bay or John Woo or something, which I do like some of their work and their style, but I certainly don't want a movie about designing shoes to be directed like that. But I am not sure what that has to do with anything. I think what you really mean is you don't like more subdued non-flashy directing. I don't need a movie to be directed as good as Fincher or Scorsese in order to like it. I do in order to love it though. To me Air is a good movie, nothing more, nothing less. Nowhere near a great movie. I don’t need it to be over the top, if it is I just tend to like it more than most people when it does go that way. Altman is becoming one of my favorite directors as I watch more of his work. As you said, he’s far from over the top.

Wait, how does that work? I think it's a fine film. People were acting like it was Heat or something when it came out, but it's just a decent middle of the road thriller. The smartest thing Ben did with Gone Baby Gone and Air is give his brother and best friend the lead roles. He has no juice as an actor or director in this movie. He’s good in others. I only really like a few of his performances. The Town is mid tier Affleck I'd say.

Agreed (on the Town performance being mid tier). I like him as Batman (a lot) and Gone Girl. His performance in The Last Duel is something else, but I like it a lot as well.

I'd also throw in Hollywoodland, Shakespeare in Love, and (of all things) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

They’re headed to the watchlist! The first would probably be amusing now post-Batman because he plays one of the actors that played Superman (also, his love interest is Diane "MARRRRTHA!" Lane). I wouldn't hop into Jay and Silent Bob without seeing the other View Askew movies.

Specifically his Clerks-verse (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Any, Dogma). I like those movies quite a bit, YMMV.

From what I know of his movies, I’d be surprised if I liked them, but I’ll keep an open mind. Kevin Smith seems like a cool guy irl though. I’ll give his filmography a shot.

With Smith you're getting like four different filmmakers - his indie gen Xer phase in the movies I just mentioned, his wannabe mainstream post Jersey Girl phase, his stoner brain horror phase, and now his "return to my roots but don't got it anymore" phase. But yeah, he's a fun guy to listen to. At least before he started hitting the ganga too hard

At least before he started hitting the ganga too hard I always thought it was hilarious when he said something to the effect of “I thought I was a director until I saw Blade Runner 2049.” He knows his place as a filmmaker. Seems his writing prowess is his best attribute.

I'm sure you're familiar with his story about writing a Superman script for Jon Peters, but if not it's comedy gold.
