Wasn’t impressed with this. Actually pretty let down by it in all honesty.
Boring heists. Lame central romance. FBI subplot was forced (and dull).
Now that I’m typing all of this out, I like it even less than I thought I did. Affleck has no juice as actor or director, and I’m generally a fan of the guy.
Thoughts on The Town? It’s one of the more disappointing movies I’ve watched in a while.

I liked it a little better than you did, but I still don’t get the 7.5 IMDb rating. To me, it was a solid crime thriller, but that’s it.

I have mixed feelings about The Town. I think most of it works, but a few things about it fall flat, particularly the love story. I also don't think the heist scenes are all that thrilling. It was disappointing, but I like it quite a bit more than you do. I think I probably like the acting more than you.
6.5/10

It is worse than Gone Baby Gone, but better than Live by Night, the 2 other crime thrillers directed by Ben Affleck. I think Gone Baby Gone is a very good directorial debut from Affleck.

Live by Night - 4.5/10

Affleck has no juice as actor or director, and I’m generally a fan of the guy. Wait, how does that work? I think it's a fine film. People were acting like it was Heat or something when it came out, but it's just a decent middle of the road thriller. The smartest thing Ben did with Gone Baby Gone and Air is give his brother and best friend the lead roles.

Not only are none of them ever as good, they also end up feeling like soft remakes every time.

I’ve watched it once and had a few drinks during it, but all I remember is thinking it felt like Affleck would’ve rather been doing anything other than directing it. Felt lazy.

I think the directing was fun and laid back. The movie flowed really well for me. And he was doing something right for me to enjoy watching a movie with a story that really has no business being a movie. The fact that I cared about what was happening is a testament to his directing and to the acting.

I understand the appreciation for Air as a mellow sports flick, it just didn’t do anything to make it feel impactful imo. It felt like it was trying to go for a Moneyball look, but it wasn’t as streamlined or able to make a “boring” subject interesting. I think I like gonzo direction more than the average person. I like when directors go for it rather than just sitting a camera down on stationary people talking. That’s what Air felt like to me.

I think you mean just great directing rather than gonzo directing. I wouldn't call Robert Altman a gonzo director for example, but he is a great director. When I think of gonzo directing I think of like Michael Bay or John Woo or something, which I do like some of their work and their style, but I certainly don't want a movie about designing shoes to be directed like that. But I am not sure what that has to do with anything. I think what you really mean is you don't like more subdued non-flashy directing. I don't need a movie to be directed as good as Fincher or Scorsese in order to like it. I do in order to love it though. To me Air is a good movie, nothing more, nothing less. Nowhere near a great movie.

B-
It was okay, certainly not the greatest thing since Heat some make it out as. I wish it had more bite & edge to it, alas it slid into softness.
