Last saw this in the late 1990s when in my teens. Quentin Tarantino has called his one of his favorite movies; I’m not feeling that same admiration. Excellent performance from Sissy Spacek but much of it feels a bit on the cheesy side. Feeling bad for Tommy Ross, who likely perished in the fire.

I doubt that killed him though, more likely knocked out, then killed in the fire.

I doubt that killed him though, more likely knocked out, then killed in the fire. Indeed. The novel has him dreaming being a child visiting the family farm before being killed (probably by the electrocution).

My disappointment was I read the book prior to seeing the movie. I had expectations regarding how I imagined the film to look and play out. Do I think it’s cheesy in parts, yes, but the film is also full of its own eras charm and atmosphere. De Palma turned a dark violent tale into something more palatable and easy going compared to the book. The performances by both Spacek and Laurie are now classic and they keep the film on track.

My mistake. He had a memory of the farm before the bucket hit him and knocked him unconscious.

Fantastic movie. Sad but riveting.
I still think that the whole, prom-night set-piece with the slo-mo, angles, editing, all compounded by Angelo Badalamenti's tension building score...is a masterclass in movie-making. Brian De Palma at his Hitchcockian finest.
