Since the 2016-2017 broadcast TV season (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox) is now over how would you rank the new sitcoms that premiered?
For me...
1) American Housewife - This one really surprised me. The reviews weren't so great going in, but I'm glad I ignored them. It ended up being a really sweet and well made show. Great cast and some different(ish) plot lines.
2) Trial and Error - This is another one that surprised me because I was never really a fan of The Office or Parks and Rec. Based of the trailer and filming style I expected it to be similar to those shows. It does have similarities, but I liked it way better than either one of those series. The writing was really strong. John Lithgow gave a great comedic performance. He deserves to be nominated for best supporting actor in a comedy series.
3) The Mick - Great black comedy for network TV. Kaitlin Olsen led a strong cast. It starts off a little slow, but quickly develops into something good.
4) Man with a Plan - Most people will probably just roll their eyes at this show, but I honestly really enjoyed it. It's cliche and doesn't feature a whole lot of new material. However, the series knows exactly what it is and plays well to it's stereotype. They know they are a silly multi-cam sitcom and just embrace it. Because of that they end up producing a pretty funny series. Kevin Nealon and Liza Snyder were standouts from the cast.
5) Superior Donuts - Really solid show. Pretty decent cast. It kind of follows a format similar to Cheers, but instead of a bar they use a donut shop. The leads are the best part of the show. Judd Hirsh is a sitcom pro and Jermaine Fowler is a good upcoming comedic performer.
6) Kevin Can Wait - Overall this was a decent series. I loved Kevin James in The King of Queens, so I was super excited to see him return to doing a sitcom. There were some good episodes, but I never felt like the show was able to truly take off. They struggled with finding the right plot lines, and there were casting issues from the start. Still though, I enjoyed having Kevin James back on my TV. Next season it looks like they are going for a bit of a reboot. They are writing out the current female lead and replacing her with Leah Remini who played James's TV wife on The King of Queens. We'll see what type of effect this has on the show.
