"Right now, he's out there. Watching, waiting. Don't look; he'll see you. Don't move; he'll hear you. Don't breathe; you're dead!"A bunch of unhappy campers, more than fed up with the evil regime set out by their sadistic caretaker Cropsy, decides that it is time to pay him back, big time. Instead, their mean little prank suddenly misfires into a burning inferno, that will have to spend the next five years strapped into a hospital bed. And with the news that the doctors can no longer ease the pain or treat the horrible flesh wounds, the heavily deformed patient are now set up for a release into the real world, and the only thing that seem to keep him going, are his hatred towards those who did him wrong.I had not seen this great little cult-classic since the summer of 2012, and that was a rather poor DVD copy, with grainy picture and very bad sound quality, still it was uncut, but when stumbling upon a fresh scandinavian DVD copy of the film, I had to pick it up. 10 years after MGM released the uncut DVD edition, finally here in my country we can also join in on one of the finest slasher adventures of the 80s. The last time I saw it, I was not too impressed, sure bad picture/sound quality, no subtitles etc, things like that can easily damage any good movie, but seeing it now, in great quality, and comparing to the summer of 2013 when I re-watched all the original Friday the 13th films, I do think The Burning have gone one step above, and become my favorite camp/wood slasher. It starts up like so many other horror films of that time, where a silly prank goes horribly wrong, and then several years later on it will come back to haunt a new set of teenagers. What I really enjoy about this film, is that it comes with so many memorable and funny characters, not just 4-5 people, but a whole bunch of them. From the camp's very own sleazy "gentleman" Eddy to the stereotypical bully, Glazer, the outsider, Alfred, or the official prankster, Dave. You also have the naive, "virgins", with a terrible taste in men, and well, it actually did not come with a old crazy lunatic, who tries in his very special way, of warning the teenagers in the beginning, that "YOU ARE DOOMED!" "ALL OF YOU!", instead we do have a pretty cool campfire tale, that do include the legend of Cropsy. Then of course, as any early 80 slasher with some self respect, you get a nice portion of tits and ass, including full frontal nudity. I sure prefer the womens in 70s and 80s horror films. No tattoos, no fake tan sprayed bodies, no silicone tits, no duck lips, no fake asses, no fake teeth, just au naturale. The special effects done to absolute perfection by none other than Tom Savini, and of course the most infamous moment, is the raft massacre, that even now, looks just as gruesome as it must have been back in 1981. My favorite scene, involving the raft is afterwards, when the jolly kids see the raft come by, and they think it is some kind of a joke, only to realize the shocking horror that must have taken place earlier. Compared to a lot of the modern CGI blood (which look so cheap and dull, like it was taken from a Video game), Savini's work is still brutal and gory as hell, and while the film does not exactly drown in blood and gore, but when the shit gets real, it sure do get messy. The filming locations and editing job are very well done, as some of the shots like the one where we go from the seedy, sleazy piss stained neon nightmare, that is downtown, New York city and head towards a more innocent place, like the beautiful opening scene of the sunrise at camp Stonewater. Now that was a really good shot. Of course, then seconds later we are back into the sleazy world of the 80s slasher genre, with a nice close-up of one of the hottest teen girls at the camp, while she runs in slow-motion and we can get a nice view of her lovely funbags, trapped inside a braless, tight shirt, then we move on and have the sleazy scumbag Eddy, along with his comedy sidekick, Dave, having a good look at the lovely and well shaped behind of Karen. Oh yeah, the 80s slashers was quite something else. The Burning (1981) features upcoming stars such as Jason Alexander (George Costanza with hair!), Holly Hunter, Steven Fisher, Leah Ayres and Larry Joshua, and was co- written/produced by the Weinstein brothers, had a chilling and very effective score done by progrock wizard Rick Wakeman and directed by Tony Maylam.

Well put, stefancrosscoe. The Burning is also one of my favorite slasher flicks. Even though it blatantly rips off the Friday The 13th storyline and some of the acting is not particularly good, it is still one of the best. It benefits from a creepy atmosphere, well-staged murder scenes, and some of the best makeup effects from Tom Savini. And like you said, there's an array of interesting characters throughout. I also enjoyed electronic Rick Wakeman score.
I first saw The Burning in 80s on VHS, which of course was the R-rated version. Even back then I could tell that certain scenes were trimmed. I was so pleased to learn that the MGM DVD was the complete uncut version, and when I saw it I noticed there was A LOT of gore that was originally cut out in the R version.

Thanks, Dramatic Look Gopher. I thought about putting it in the last horror, suspense or thriller movie thread, but since the search function seem to no longer be of any use, I took a sharp look through the 14 pages in the horror section, and could not find a topic of this bad ass slasher cult-classic. While The Burning might not be the most original slasher, it does something very few of that time did: having two male characters in a desperate last stand against the killer, when in most of the typical slasher flicks, it is usally a strong minded female, that is the last survivor. I saw it first on Youtube back in 2007, of course the part with the raft massacre was left out, which kind of sucked, but still a slasher that I enjoyed, and was very pleased to see the MGM DVD uncut being released the same year. 10 years later, I finally picked up the scandinavian, probably more or less the same film, no new features/scenes, but it is one of those rare slasher films, I can easily have 2-3 copies of, just in case.

Are you sure that Friday did not rip off the Burning? The Friday series does have reputation for stealing other people work ...

I can barely remember anything about it. Didn't think it was too bad.

But I just read the IMDb trivia for The Burning and it said that Harvey Weinstein claims wrote the Burning script prior to the release of Friday the 13th. So now I'm totally confused!

I loved The Burning, I've never seen Friday the 13th, honestly never had any real interest to, but I still think The Burning is superior. But man, what is it with 80s horror movies taking place at camps? Got Sleepaway Camp too, am I missing any?

Madman (1982) has also a bit of the same plot as The Burning, bunch of kids telling a campfire tale of some lunatic lurking around in the dark deep woods, but is probably a more comedy/cheesy slasher, than scary. But, still a fun ride for fans of horror films taking place at a camp, but do not expect Friday the 13th quality. Back then, I guess every major movie studio wanted to join in on the success of Friday the 13th, and not every film was as memorable or good as Sleepaway Camp or The Burning. Another more silly (than scary) late 80s slasher, was Cheerleader Camp (1988) which I thought was lots of fun, even though it is not in the same league as the ones from the early 80s.

I remember being disappointed by "Madman". Need to give it a rewatch though, as that was a decade ago. I thought it was actually well made though.

The Madman Marz theme was quite catchy, but the film was probably one of the least scary or menacing of the slasher genre, as the Madman Marz looked like some fat redneck hobo, along with a voice/grunting that sounded hilarious.
