Does he? I'm not sure he deserved it last year let alone this year.

Interestingly, the last back to back Conn Smyth was also a Penguin, Mario Lemieux, 1991 & 1992

Does he? I'm not sure he deserved it last year let alone this year. My thoughts exactly. I actually thought he didn't win it last year.

As an aside, a little while ago on local sports radio they were talking about the 'Mount Rushmore' of hockey and whether Crosby could bump out Howe, Orr, Gretzky and Lemieux. One guy said he was close but would be in a 'next 4' group. Another guy chimed in and said no way he's ahead of Yzerman, Sakic and Messier and maybe he'd be top 20. How wrong I thought he was then and even more so now.

You don't think Malkin was better?

You don't think Malkin was better? In individual games sure. Overall? Nope. Crosby was the best player on either team in games 4 and 5 and was right up there in game 6.

He Deserves It! Still though, When was the last time a Hockey Player won the MVP Back to Back ? Only the third time it happen in NHL history (Bernie Parent in 1974/1975 and Mario Lemieux in 1991/1992)

You don't think Malkin was better? I think it was pretty even over the course of the playoffs. Both were better at different points. I would've been cool with either winning. Surprised by some of criticism Crosby getting the Smythe is getting. It's not like they gave it to Scott Wilson. Crosby finished one point behind Malkin in essentially two less games. Led the playoffs in PPG, led the Pens in scoring over the last two rounds, and was the Penguins best skater in the final with truly standout performances in games 4&5. I've seen a lot of people suggest Guentzel should've won. I certainly wouldn't try to undersell his impact. He led the playoffs in goals, including some very big ones. But I don't feel like he had the impact of either Malkin or Crosby overall. Those two were carrying a lot more weight. Last year was a little dicier. There was an argument for Sid, but it was one that was very analytics based, and I'm positive that's not why he got the most votes.

If Kessel didn't get it last year no way should Guentzel be more than third this year.
In their first Cup Malkin got the MVP with Crosby also deserving. Last year was almost like a career achievement MVP win for Crosby. He's been great for a decade in the regular season and had great playoffs in years the Pens didn't win so as captain how could he not get it last year when he played so well?
So we get this year. Was Guentzel, a rookie, better overall than either Crosby or Malkin? No way. If Kessel had repeated what he did last year I think he just might've won it, but he wasn't quite as impactful. In reality I'd say Fleury and Murray should've shared the win but that wasn't going to happen. That leaves Crosby or Malkin. I'd argue Crosby has been shortchanged on the number of Hart trophies he's won so now they're going to put Malkin one up on him for the Conn Smythe?
If Rinne had played a whole lot better in his losses in the Final I think he might have had an outside chance of winning it.
