It wasn't THAT bad. People are crapping all over this movie, and don't get me wrong, its no masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not like its the worst movie of the year either. I had fun with it. It was cheesy, campy fun. Actually no worse than any of the previous Brendan Fraser Mummy franchise. Except the expectations were higher for this one than for those. When you see it on DVD you'll see what I mean.
By the way... It flopped here, but it had a $169.3M worldwide opening weekend. So actually NOT a flop. The studios are no longer looking at domestic alone. They are now looking world wide. The probably wont be looking toward a sequel necessarily, but they'll definitely move ahead with their "Dark Universe".

Still Universal needs 2 take a second look at their DU. Example, y make BOF before Frankenstein?

Well it just means Frankenstein's monster already exists when the film starts. The Bride with Sting did it.

By now it is 125m vs. around 300m.
But why more in advertising than into the production? Can't you run cheaper campaigns?!

Something tells me people want to get the shared universe a fair shake, regardless how each movie turns out. I don't know if it's because Tom Cruise is affiliated with it or before simply disinterested in classic monsters, but people seem to almost want this to fail.

OP is right! Every year USA share of worldwide box office decreases. In 2017, USA is taking about 20% op worldwide box office.
Studios will greenlight sequels regardless of US gross.
