Watching Sadie Thompson
First viewing of this 1928 Silent, the first version of Somerset Maugham's Rain. I have seen the talkie that was made four years later with Joan Crawford and Walter Huston. This time it's Gloria Swanson as the prostitute on a tropical island fighting over morality with a hypocritical reforming preacher, a young Lionel Barrymore. Director Raoul Walsh does double duty as the soldier she invites to her "boodwar".
Even without speaking, Ms Swanson expresses so much with her face, dramatic yet restrained. I see why she was nominated. Too bad she didn't have such success again until many years later in Sunset Boulevard. I usually love LB in everything he does, but like Huston's performance better in the remake. It would have been very interesting to have seen Ms Swanson play alongside WH.
Unfortunately there are some parts of the film (nitrate stock) that are damaged, and many of the final scenes were completely lost. They have been reconstructed using titles and stills, but we all know what happened.

Next up is San Antonio
I've seen this one many times as I am a big Flynn fan. But this is not one of his better outings.
Formulaic Warner Bros oater with typical but thin cattle rustler plot. And the only WB western stock players is Cuddles - no Alan Hale or Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams. However, it is beautifully photographed in glorious Technicolor, and makes a mostly decorative Alexis Smith look stunning.
I much prefer 1939's Dodge City. It has everything!

Lots of films I haven't seen, and a guilty pleasure, The Sandpiper. Can't resist BURTON AND Taylor in on of their better outings. It's cheesy but has some nice moments and tge big Sur never looked lovelier. Special favorites are James mason's young son speaking Chaucer, Charles Bronson and James Edwards as Taylor's hippy sidekicks.

Now showing: San Francisco. Have seen this several times.
Hollywood's first disaster blockbuster?
Clark Gable here is at his most macho, at least at the beginning. Jeannette MacDonald does a lot of singing. It is pretty, yet I have found her dated, warbling, operatic style to be an acquired taste. As far as her acting, I especially like her look of disdain as she auditions Gable at his saloon, and he asks to see her legs to which she replies "I'm a singer", and he insists "OK, let's see your legs!" Maybe it had to to do with the fact that they did not get along at all during filming and avoided each other off the set. Spencer Tracy is the priest who hounds Gable to repent his sinful ways. He is credible and good, and it did advance his rising star, but for me, he's a much better priest in Boys Town for which he did win Oscar. Love and respect Tracy, but I just don't see why he was nominated (his first) for this performance, perhaps to make-up for Fury? On a personal note - I never like seeing Ted Healy, the original front man for The Three Stooges. I thoroughly dislike him as he royally screwed the Howard brothers and Larry Fine, was mean and not funny.
The special effects of the 1906 earthquake are amazing for its time, and still hold up incredibly well today. Too bad the Oscar for SFX wasn't around back then. I think the ending is a tad over-sentimental as the earthquake survivors sing Nearer My God to Thee in the gathering on the hill, and march off singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Everyone, even Blackie, now seems to have found religion. Then again, things usually do change after a tragedy.

One of my favs: The Sea Wolf (1941) playing now.
What a great movie and cast: The GREAT Eddie G, as the sadistic Captain Larsen, in one of his greatest performances; John Garfield and Ida Lupino are on the run from a prison sentence.
Very tense drama. Supporting players are tremendous: a treacherous Barry Fitzgerald playing against type; and Gene Lockhart (June's dad) as the drunken ship's doctor is riveting. His scene on the mast has left an impression on me to this day.

The wonderful musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is up next. One of my favorite musicals.
Howard Keel is the ultra-manly (what a testosterone-infused voice!) brother who teaches his brothers manners so they can git women with singin' and dancin'.
Seriously, this movie has great songs, dancing and story.
Best scene is when first meets all the bros meet their oldest bros' new GF.
Bonus: look out for Julie Newmar (Catwoman in TV's Batman)

I just watched Shall We Dance. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends.
