www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40258091Iran became the second team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup as they beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in Tehran. Goals from Sardar Azmoun and Mehdi Taremi ensured Iran, coached by Carlos Queiroz, will appear at successive World Cups for the first time. Victory meant they opened an eight-point advantage over their opponents, who are third in the table. Five-time winners Brazil were the first team to join hosts Russia at next year's tournament. The top two teams in each of Asia's two qualifying groups progress to the World Cup, while the teams in third place go into a series of play-offs.

When Iran played USA in 98, I could SWEAR it was on July 4th, and I heard Danny Baker making comment about it. But of course, it wasn't.

Blitzed their group, which to be fair was the far easier with only South Korea (who aren't going flash for some reason) their only real challenge. In the other group, Japan slipped meaning they must take points off Australia and Saudi Arabia in their last two games to avoid coming third. Uzbekistan has third in the Group A sewn up, but won't beat the other side. That playoff then plays fourth in CONCACAF - most likely Panama or Honduras.

Much more winnable team to beat for the 4th placer this time, NZ were unlucky to get Mexico in the CONCACAF playoff last time and whilst they probably wouldn't have beaten the likes of a Honduras, it would have been much more competitive.
