'Only the Lonely' with John Candy is terrific. Highly recommend it.

I heard about that... I'll do an automatic record -- I find John Candy very likable. One of the more overlooked John Candy comedy gems, and certainly one of the finest films that seemed to be heavily inspired or influenced by the 1955 classic, Marty which also deals with loneliness, and one of the best of doing so. A very funny, charming and tender romantic-comedy/drama, with fantastic acting by Ernest Borgnine in the lead role. "Ma, sooner or later, there comes a point in a man's life when he's gotta face some facts. And one fact I gotta face is that, whatever it is that women like, I ain't got it."

The one that came to mind instantly was the Burt Lancaster film The Swimmer. He doesn't really spend much time alone in the movie in a literal sense but he is a very lonely man. The final scene is haunting.

LOL! While I don't know if I would consider a film that is approximately 20 years old as a "Classic Film"... Living on a island for several years by yourself is about as lonely as one can get... Oh wait... "WILSON" was with him. Still, I can't think of any other movies where a character was so isolated for so long. The movie would have to be in the Top 5 at least.

Actually, one can be even more lonely when surrounded by people. On the island, he had a reason to feel lonely. He was alone on an island ! Lonely in a crowd ? One always wonders "why ?"

Moon (2009).
Unlike some other posters, I don't define 'classic' by the age of the film.

Robinson Crusoe (1954) Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964)* The Last Man on Earth (1964)* The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959) The Lonely Guy (1984)*
*Maybe "classic" is a little generous.
