I agree with pretty much everything that has been mentioned, particularly "Castaway", "The Conversation", and "Taxi Driver."
Also nice to see some love for "Moon." That was one of those gems that was recommended to me by Netflix that ended up being a treat to watch.
The first movie I thought of came up kind of randomly, though not about traditional loneliness, was "Clean and Sober" (1989). It more examines the isolation the character creates for himself through addiction. Michael Keaton is superb in this and seems to have a penchant for playing lonely or melancholy dramatic roles.

IMPO - Although to me it's considered a now-classic this movie definitely comes to mind and was a most memorable one for me as well . The Station Agent 2003 I also agree with some of the film choices I have also seen here and the ones I haven't will just add to " my personal watch list " soon thanks to everyone for the recommendations here too .
