A copy of my Politics board thread: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-london-40239008God, this is just awful. How could this happen? Why were fire alarms so quiet you couldn't hear them inside flats? Why were people advised to remain in their flats? How did the fire spread so rapidly? These and many more questions need to be answered as soon as possible to prevent another tragedy like this. I dread to think what the final death toll will be.

Being trapped in a fire is one of my worst fears, I've never lived in a tower block but I've had friends who have and they always make me a bit nervous. I always thought they were designed so that fire couldn't spread between floors which is why the advice is to stay in your flat, I think the firefighter need to use the fire escapes, I heard on the radio this morning that they fight fires in tower blocks on the inside, not from outside. But the fire alarms not working is criminal.

Not sure about the apartments...or the country in general...but most public buildings in USA are designed to be Fire rated between floors and many other areas which usually translates into a length of time. 2 hour rated is typical meaning you the wall can theoretically burn for two hours before breaching.Typically stairwells and elevator shafts are sealed from the outside and even have a positive air vacuum.
I've mostly worked in commercial and hospital buildings tho so I'm sure residential is a little different. Although the size of an apartment complex makes me think the standards should be similar.

I was shocked to see on the news the way that tower block was burning. What the fuck was it made of? Napalm?
And there was me thinking we had building regulations that prevented people from being able to build tower blocks that burned like a torch.

I was reading this morning that it's the same stuff that coated that tower in Dubai that caught fire earlier this year. How many other tower blocks have this same cladding? Confirmed death toll has now risen to 17.

Total of dead so far is now at 17, but it is expected it will be far worse.
PM May has visited the site of the tragedy today. This is an improvement from yesterday when she issued sympathies for the casualties and victims through a spokesperson, presumably as she was too busy climbing into bed with ant-abortionists and creationists to spare the time more than that.

17 more victims of uncontrolled capitalism and "cheaper is better" mentality. Well done, Tories. Their blood is on your hands.

The conservatives and their policies are to blame for this. Their funding cuts have affected fire stations, policing and other essential institutions. Huh? The news said the fire services arrived in force within 6 minutes of the alarm being triggered. How soon were you expecting them to come were it not for 'the conservatives and their policies'?

I read that some of the first fire trucks to respond only had four riders with them because of budget cuts.. Hardly enough to tackle a fire such as this one.

I think as well that one of the closed down fire stations was one that would have been closest to this tower as well.
