Sorry, can't seem to find the MLB Draft thread from the other day (no, I didn't look particularly hard), so here we go.
The Nats drafted a guy named Trey Turner, not to be confused with Trea Turner, and Kirk Cousins' cousin. Is this like, because there are a million rounds in the draft, they did it to be funny? They asked Jenkins the stoned intern who to draft in that spot and he, trying and failing to hold in his binger, spouts out "Trey Turner" and then pisses himself laughing? No other real plausible explanation.
EDIT: No, I didn't steal the bit from barstool.

So it's not possible that he was a reasonable pick in that spot based on talent? Sorry, not sure if I'm missing a joke here or what.

Their first pick is the only one I've read up on, David Peterson, a lefthanded pitcher from Oregon coming in at 6-6, 240 with great command, according to his scouting report. I haven't read up on the other picks, but it seems as though they took 7 college pitchers in the first 10 rounds (but I could be wrong). Conventional wisdom is that college pitchers develop the fastest and can be impactful for the big club in a short period of time, but teams don't seem to be constructed this way any more. If there's anything we can learn from the Mets alone is that building around starting pitching is great when it works.....but they're much more fragile commodities than your everyday players tend to be. In 2014, Matt Harvey was lost to Tommy John Surgery. In 2015, Zack Wheeler went down. In 2016, Harvey went down with thoracic outlet surgery, Wheeler wasn't able to make it back, and both Matz and DeGrom got hurt, missing the last 6 weeks of the year. This year, Matz and Lugo just came back, Syndergaard is month 2 of a 3 month absence and Harvey may be hurt again. If that's the strength of your team, it's just too tenuous a balance to consistently put out a winning product. Maybe they just went with a "take the best guy in that spot" approach in the draft which is fine, but if they went in targeting starting pitchers specifically above all others then I have to question their judgment. After Amed Rosario and Dom Smith, they really don't have any everyday players who will be ready to make an impact within 3 years and that's not ideal when teams are building around hitting and bullpens nowadays.

nice! that college pitcher move sounds solid. He does have a good build for a starter and has good looking command but who the hell knows what'll happen. Total crap shoot.
