Wilmer Flores, upon hearing unconfirmed reports and showers of cheers from the fans, gets quite emotional during the game in what turned out to be a really great human interest story:
Then, after the trade was nixed, two days later, in the 1st inning on a Friday night against the then-division leading Natinals, he made this great play:
And then, of course, in the 12 inning of the same game...
Yeah, it's the Mets, I'm a Mets fan, eat it. This was a great story for Flores and Mets fans. Flores has been on the team for what feels like forever, so it's easy to forget that he was just 23 when this happened. He was drafted at the age of 16, spoke 0 english and was sent to play in Georgia of all places, not exactly a hotbed of welcoming bodies to a young Venezuelan kid who was a complete fish out of water. To find out he had been traded by the team who gave him his shot, who he had been with since he was still a young kid, to what is essentially his family was an emotional thing. We don't see a ton of that in pro sports - a real human reaction to something that is purely business driven. It was touching.
Putting aside the fact that this trade not happening resulted in them getting Cespedes (and not getting Carlos Gomez who was atrocious down the stretch that year), but for Wilmer to have that moment just two days later in such a big spot was a huge boost for the team. He's been pretty solid ever since too, turning himself into a quality hitter and getting better every day.

Thank you, klaw. so happy that trade didn't go through. CG sucks, getting cespedes was much better. anyway, we really need flores now after that injuries to walker and cabrera

This is the perfect time. It's early enough in the season so bring him up for 15 games, let him get his feet wet, then Cabrera comes back and you send him back down. Then you can bring him back up for a stretch run, but there is nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with letting him get a taste now, let him get his yips and nerves out of the way. It makes zero sense to bring up Gavin Cecchini.

Love the movie, but it's somewhat of a guilty pleasure. The Hall-of-Fame museum scenes are sappy and awful. The league lasted several years but all the photos are pretty much dedicated to the team that lost the title the first year and one-year-player Dottie.
Then there's the scene where Hanks quickly grabs the war-news telegram and walks ever so slowly to its recipient in order to make everyone as stressed out as possible before finally giving it to her like it's a game show.

Classic movie, but I'd be lying if I said seeing Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna didn't pull me out of the narrative.
