I'm curious if everybody could take a moment to recall way back in phase 1, what you thought was going to happen in the MCU and how much different, or even the same, it is from what your first theories were. How much did Thanos' appearance in Avengers really nail home the long term plan they had? Where you shocked to see the cosmic cube in First Avenger? Has anything not happened that you were sure would happen?

Once we got to Thor and Cap: TFA, it was total curve-ball territory. Its really only from Phase 2-onwards that I fell into pace with being able to speculate where it was going.

In 2008 when I first saw Iron Man and that end credits bit with Nick Fury, 2012 seemed so far away and the idea of an actual Avengers movie being released that I wasn't sure if they'd pull it off. Clearly, I'm going to hell for having such little faith.

Cant play. I stepped in with Avengers and saw the rest of phase one later.

Honestly I was one of the few who said that a Captain America film wouldn't work or be a hit. I like the character, but he's obviously a product of the time of his creation. Plus America isn't exactly popular country, so a character named CAPTAIN AMERICA to me was doom to fall.
After that, it was mostly just being curious if Marvel could pull off The Avengers.

So as someone for whom the entirety of Phase One was essentially backstory or prologue, did it detract from viewing it after having seen Avengers, enhance those movies because you knew they were all building toward something (even) cooler, or it made no difference?

Cant play. I stepped in with Avengers and saw the rest of phase one later. That's actually an interesting experience. Can you describe that? Were there elements you didn't pick up on in Avengers at first, did things stand out to you in the solo films that might not have, etc? Are you glad you saw it in that order or do you wish you'd seen it the other way? Sometimes it's interesting to watch things in reverse.

Plus America isn't exactly popular country, I was also suspicious, but this quote of yours is something that is very curious to me. Watch the United States enter the Olympics, watch the massive cheer, and you'll realize the country is pretty popular. I don't know when the malaise of self defeat and depression set over the country, but it reminds me of a good looking girl who thinks she's fat and won't talk to anybody.

Ok Im gonna reply to Colden and Archie at the same time. Hope you guys can share... πππ
When I watched the Avengers for the first time I immediately understood there were movies before The Avengers that were connected. Little references here and there. But it didnt effect my understanding of the movie in any way. Neither was my enjoyment effected.
Few months later I went to the big Media Markt store here in Rotterdam. I saw a box with all phase one movies including The Avengers. Mind you I wasnt even aware which movies were in phase one. Actually the whole MCU concept I only found out after I bought the box.
I watched Iron Man 1 and 2 first. Than Captain America. After that The Incredible Hulk and last Thor. When I saw TIH the first time I wasnt aware that it was connected to the MCU. Different actor and in the Avengers there was no reference that really connects to The Incredible Hulk. I did like the movie but I had no clue. I did pick up a few things in the solo outings which I wouldnt have if I hadnt watched The Avengers first. Mind you, I had and have never read any Marvel (or DC for that matter) comic book. So when Tony grabs that plastic shield to level his particle tube I understood it. I wouldnt have otherwise. All though for CB fans it was quite obvious. Im the noob here.
After watching them all I started reading and found out about the MCU. And later I saw the movies in order. But my obsession started later. I even skipped Thor TDW in the theatre. Not because of lack of interest but more out of lack of awareness. I had different priorities back than. My obsession started with Winter Soldier. After that I really got into things and have never missed a MCU outing in the theatre again.
And it was only with Avangers Age of Ultron when I stayed for the end credit scene. I saw the rest much later.

I had the reverse experience: watched everything in Phase One, loved Avengers , and then sort of lost faith in the MCU between that and the second Avengers because they made a bunch of stuff I had (have) no interest in seeing, namely Ant Man and Guardians; don't care about those characters whatsoever.

I'll admit I based it mostly on how people from other countries talked about the united States on social media and other outlets on the internet. I do remember alot of hate back when George W Bush was in office, so with that I'd assume we weren't exactly a beloved country to many outside of the states. Obviously it's not the case now, since so many care about, now Trump in office (lol)

i was aware that they were making stand alone films leading up to an Avengers feature but at that point i'd lost faith in contemporary superhero films. i just assumed they'd all be garbage. even after loving the first Iron Man and mostly liking the sequel (which was the only Phase i flick i ever saw at the theater) i didn't yet bother with the others. i can't recall now if i thought it was just a fluke, or that it rested too heavily on RDJ's shoulders, or what.
