In 1940, somewhere from 55 to 65% of British military personnel smoked cigarettes.
If we barely see anybody smoking in the upcoming film, then Christopher Nolan is a dumb-ass.

Are you an idiot or something? nobody smokes anymore, and who cares if 90% smoked in the past??--We don't need to see UGLY CANCEROUS Cigarettes in ANYBODY's mouth in today's movies--now go whine about another stupid thing

That's a BINGO. To me it seems utterly ludicrous to make the effort (and spend the $$$) to strive for historical accuracy in terms of weapons, uniforms, equipment, etc., but yet purposefully NOT accurately depict how people really lived/behaved in 1940. And cigarettes put no dent in the budget whatsoever. BTW: I am an ex-smoker.

I would rather they focus on getting the war scenes historically accurate over cigarettes, but yeah I see your point.

These fuckers on the run are out of ammo, food, fuel, courage, honor and pride, why should they have left cigarettes? German troops trapped (for months) in Stalingrad hoarded their cigarettes. As for Dunkirk in '40, all those rescuers who formed the evacuation effort weren't cut off from supply -- and they smoked like chimneys, too. It would simply be monumentally stupid for an otherwise meticulous filmmaker like Nolan to purposefully tone down/omit cigarettes from a WWII movie merely to assuage modern sensibilities.

Christopher Nolan is a dumb ass if he doesn't put in a thing that has no bearing on the story whatsoever? No one but you gives a fuck if we see cigarettes in this movie. Its not a movie about cigarettes or the cigarette industry or even the social life of some hard smoking cigarette smokers. Its a world war 2 movie. I could care less if I see even 1 cigarette. This is the shit that bothers you? wtf

...Which means we should absolutely see plenty of cigarettes.
A WWII movie without smoking is like a film about the Napoleonic Wars that does not feature men wearing plumed hats or riding horses.

I agree with you, and I'd hope for historical depiction purposes that you'd see at least some smoking. Doesn't have to be in every scene, but yeah it'd be silly if the overtly anti-smoking trend(and I understand this) of today would cause no smoking to be depicted in this movie.
