I think that would have made it more personal for Diana, but also create a better dynamic between the two. I know the DCEU is taking liberties with the Greek mythology, but just from what I know from it, Zeus was a straight up asshole, so I don't see why he'd go the lengths to protect the Amazons from Ares anymore than he'd want to protect mankind. And Hippolyta did have a relationship with Ares in the comics. I don't know, there are so many ways they could have improved on Ares in the film.

I was kind of hoping for that for quite some time..........but that didn't happen.

I would argue that Diana being Zeus' daughter still makes Ares a personal foe, since it makes them half-siblings.

because this would be one of the most overused and lazy writing tropes ever. I am all for strong, developed villains. But based on ideas and execution. Creating a good villain is one of the hardest things in writing.
It's OK for an origin story to focus on the protagonist and their development, even at the price of leaving the antagonist sketchy at that. But the PTB will seriously have to improve on this aspect in the next film, when the "a protagonist is only as good as their antagonist/obstacle they face" rule sets in.
